Book Description

2 April 1998
An ideology is sweeping Europe and the world which threatens democracy and the rule of law. The post-national ideology, which posits that nation-states are no longer capable of running their own affairs in a modern, interdependent economy, confuses the constitution of a state with the power of its government, and ignores the importance of the sense of community essential to any democratic debate. A rigorous synthesis of historical and philosophical arguments, THE TAINTED SOURCE is a powerful appeal in favour of the constitutional foundations of the liberal order. Post-national structures - multinational companies, 'region-states' and supranational organisations such as the European Union - are corrosive of liberal values, to such an extent that John Laughland makes it devastatingly clear that the post-national ideology formed a crucial core of Nazi economic and political thinking. Like the European ideology of today, it was predicted on dissolving the nation-state and the liberal order.

5.0 out of 5 stars The EU project shown for what it is. 19 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This superbly written book shows the Euro project as it really is; the desire to abolish European nation states; to exert control over all aspects of human & economic behaviour; to create a protectionist trading bloc. Detailed research shows the contempt shown (particularly by the French) of genuine free trade, and the political motives of the so-called European Court. Anybody interested in freedom & democracy must read this book.

John Laughland has created a masterful political and historic study that uniquely champions the cause and nobility of the sovereignty of individual nation states and their right to enjoy those liberal political values and democratic social freedoms that the Anglo-Saxon peoples have always enjoyed and globally championed.
The Tainted Source graphically demonstrates that the political, social and even intellectual freedom of all citizens of the EU are today in dire peril because of the dark and secret political agenda of a German-inspired, EU ambition to break the commercial power and world influence of, principally, the United States; but also any other liberal, freedom-loving nation-state, especially those current and former peoples of the British Commonwealth.
This well kept secret ambition towards a German-orchestrated EU Superstate has been fully supported every step of the way by France, who hopes to share power at any ultimate, world decision-making table. We are shown, that in order to realise this, the EU has, and will continue, to absorb most European nations into its sinister orbit; even having firm plans (already in motion) to closely affiliate itself with Russia, as it attempts to dominate international politics and commerce for all time. Simultaneously, the EU is actively attempting to suppress freedom of intellectual thought and choice within its expanded 'new imperial' frontiers, by spinning a powerful and consistent web of lies and deceit designed to mask the EU's true ambition and also to allay most suspicions until it is too late for any individual nation to offer a legitimate democratic resistance to this age-old Teutonic ambition!

This is a superb book, very well researched, in depth, and with many expositions of important and interesting related topics along the way of which I had little or no previous knowledge, eg the Classical Gold Standard and the effect on world economics of its being abandoned at the outbreak of WW1. But of course the central topic is the EU and how many developments which we are currently witnessing such as the single currency and a Central Bank had already been planned by Hitler or even earlier. Throughout WW2 a common Nazi theme was that the 3rd Reich was, in effect, actually doing Europe a favour and that the other European countries should gladly embrace a united Europe, whilst acknowledging Germany as the strong centre of it. Sounds familiar?

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my very favorite books. 3 Oct 2000
By chester a nagle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As one reads this book one can feel layer upon layer being peeled away from the hype built up around the emergence of the European Union as a political entity. This extremely well-written book not only opened my eyes to the tremendous falsehoods perpetrated by advocates of the new European superstate, it also made me painfully aware of the caliber of most of the top European political leaders. What sort of people advocate the EU? What are the motives behind their enthusiasm? The book answers all these questions and more. A chapter on the evolution of central banks gives an invaluable added dimension to the already rich text, and the expose of the highly unsavory elitism that pervades much -- if not most -- of the political class in Europe, both within and outside the membership of the EU. This is a brilliant work that draws on parallels from the past to reveal the true historical ancestry of the European Union. That ancestry is not pretty, but it is absolutely vital for anyone interested in contemporary international politics, including (perhaps especially) Americans, to know about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb analysis of Europe's malaise 23 Dec 2001
By Charles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What intrigued me most about Laughland's book from the get go was the first chapter, Fascists and Federalists, which I found on the web. As a student of WWII it was only last year that I became aware of the sheer numbers of foreign volunteers for the Waffen SS and the extent of active collaboration with the National Socialist program from a broad spectrum of Europeans, not just Germans. Aside from documenting the efforts of the Nazis to cloak their grasp for world domination in the guise of defending 'European' civilization, Laughland shows that there was a sincere body of thought in France and Germany in the interwar years that rejected both old style nationalism and Bolshevik Russia, which unfortunately the Fascists were able to seize upon. However, the next time you hear some ignorant person describe an advocate of limited government and nationalism as 'a fascist' tell them about the first chapter of this book. The jackboot is on the other foot, so to speak.
More importantly than these dubious historical links is the lack of a democratic philosophy extending beyond just 'who gets what' in the minds of most European elites. I would caution the reader however, that Laughland does not talk much about the individuals on the Continent who are working to create a democratic and accountable United States of Europe - like Otto von Hapsburg. Laughland simply doesn't think it can be done. The last few chapters include a spirited defense of neoclassical liberalism. Laughland argues that borders are critical jurisdictions but not boundaries to free trade; the gold standard would lead to sounder money (all snickering from wonks and Fed worshippers aside); and law is a system based on objective moral values and not dirigiste bureaucratic management.
I have seen no better exposition of the Euroskeptic position.

3.0 out of 5 stars Laughland explores the hidden roots of Europeanism 21 May 2006
By Earth that Was - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
John Laughland examines the dark underbelly of European unity. He turns over the rocks and shows how many of the institutional precursors, indeed many of the bureaucratic architects, of 'the New Europe' had their genesis in the infrastructure of Nazi occupation. He shows how German's current pro-European position has it's precursoes in the strategy Bismark pursued for decades in the quest for a Prussian dominated 'United Germany'.

To top it off Laughland explores how the liberal and representative institutions that characterise "western democracies" are themselves organic and interactive parts of their overall nation. Attempts to transfer or mimic their functions at a super-national level essentially take them out of their context, the social contracts, that sustained them aand gave them meaning.

The European project, whatever benefits it no doubt delivers, frankly represents the gravest threat to the traditional liberties of european peoples since the fall of communism. The technocrats of course, like all apparatchiks, prefer to extend their power in the dark. Laughland's book is a necessary corrective to the mass of pro-european writings that fail to look under the rocks.
