Review
An enchanting, original and hugely enjoyable fantasy about a high-spirited girl who discovers she's a mermaid (Francesca Simon )
An absolutely enchanting debut - a salty splash of something fresh within the tradition of the mermaid world. (Amanda Craig )
Cheshire Life, January 2004
A magical fantasy - exciting, touching, funny and highly original.
Amanda Craig, THE INDEPENDENT
'Emily is a spirited girl, more than equal to the delightful cast of eccentrics given voice here by Tessa Gallagher, and the descriptions of how she finds justice, friendship, and a father kept prisoner by King Neptune, are intertwined with mesmerising descriptions of underwater scenery. As rich and strange as anything in THE LITTLE MERMAID, it is perfect for keeping boys and girls of eight and over in suspended animation all the way to the coast.'

Product Description
Emily Windsnap lives on a boat, but her mother has always been oddly anxious to keep her out of the water. It is only when Emily has her first school swimming lesson that she discovers why: as soon as she gets into the water, she grows a tail!
Soon Emily discovers a glorious underwater world of fishes, coral, shipwrecks and mermaids, and, best of all, she finds a best friend! With mermaid Shona Silkfin by her side, Emily uncovers a surprising family secret and embarks on a quest to reunite her mum and dad.
This enchanting fantasy deals with universal themes of family, friendship, love and justice - all handled with the lightness of touch for which Liz Kessler is so well known.
From the Inside Flap
Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat her whole life. But her mother, Mary Penelope, has seemed oddly anxious to keep her away from the water. When she is finally allowed to have swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery. As she learns more about herself, Emily explores the glorious world under the sea, where Neptune rules and mermaids go to school. And she finds out the truth about the father she has never met. How Emily learns her family secrets, and how she braves Neptune's wrath to reunite her father and mother, makes a thrilling adventure. With its enchanting underwater scenes and its range of unusual characters such as the mermaid Shona Silkfin, Mr Beeston the lighthouse keeper and Millie, the psychic from the pier, this is a magical fantasy that is exciting, touching, funny and highly original. Liz Kessler lives on a narrowboat in rural Cheshire. She has worked as a teacher and a journalist and she wanted to be a writer from the age of nine, when her first poem was printed in the local newspaper. As well as writing, Liz works as an editorial consultant, offering advice to other children's writers. This is her first book for children and it grew out of a poem she wrote about a mermaid.

From the Back Cover
Can you keep a secret?
I know everyone has secrets but mine's different. I mean, how many mermaids do you know?
It all started with a swimming lesson at school. I was in for a big surprise, and, after that, the surprises just kept on coming. I discovered a whole other world beneath the waves and found a new best friend.
This is my story.
Swishy wishes,
Emily Windsnap
