Forget THE BILL and countless other cop series which we've been served over the past couple of years... if you wanted excitement, relentlessly violent action, a fair dose of realism and good old British humour, then you'd get THE SWEENEY in which the Flying Squad's finest, Insp. Jack Regan (John Thaw) and Sgt. George Carter (Dennis Waterman) regularly nabbed robbers, thieves and other big-time criminals, using as much brute force as possible, and now and then, there'd be the odd gunfight or two. The labyrynthine plot of this first movie spin-off may not do the series much justice, but nevertheless, it's fast-paced and features a chase sequence which ends with Regan swearing violently at a taxi-driver who won't give him a lift. Earlier on in the film, there's a bl***y good punch-up between Regan's men and a gang of blaggers which culminates in Regan ordering Carter to kick the gangleader in the nuts! Apart from that, there's really not a lot of action, but it is interesting to see how Regan dodges his enemies and works his way through an elaborate conspiracy, involving a drunken politician (Ian Bannen) and his weaselly right-hand man (Barry Foster). John Thaw is as good as ever, making a bit of time between the sheets with a young Diane Keen and the ending is quite good when Regan's rebelliousness leads to villain McQueen's demise at the hand of his own hitmen.
