The best gets better! 7 April 2004
Format:DVD
After the advent of the series one box set I anxiously waited for the follow up, and the wait has not been at all dissapointing, and well worth it.
The digital remastering of these classic episodes is superb, and allows us to see and hear the best of 1970's action with 21st century technology.
The stars (many of whom we still recognise) putting in guest appearances are as ever superb, and the episode introductions by some of them give us an informed insight into the backstage goings on as well as story line embelishments.
For those of us who remember The Sweeney from the first time these box sets are real gems to savour alone or indeed to share socially with friends of a certain age. For classic car fans such as myself, every outdoor scene is a trip down memory lane.
Roll on the 3rd series - as soon as possible!

The basic formula of the second Sweeney series is unchanged from the first, but great dialogue and characters ensure that even the most hackneyed plotline still entertains. The characters of Regan and Carter evolve during this series, especially after Carter's wife is killed, until they're harder drinking and more cynical than ever. A particularily outstanding episode is the series climax, "Trojan Bus", which features one of the oddest chase sequences in the history of cop shows!

An added appeal of the Sweeney is how amazingly anachronistic the mid seventies look. Clothes and decor that we will (hopefully) never see again, but which are currently being romanticised by films like the Starsky and Hutch rehash. Ultimately the Sweeney is far more satisfying than a remake of a notoriously plotless US cop show. The visceral action, seedy characters and rundown London backdrop make this much more enthralling.

The DVD extras are great, including a Sweeney annual from 1975 in a format you can view or print on your computer. The only regrettable omission are interviews with Dennis Waterman and John Thaw - the latter died before the Sweeney was given this well deserved DVD release.

classic sweeney 2 6 Jun 2011
By Ms. M. Potter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

The Sweeney has been long hailed as a milestone in British TV history for its quality acting and direction. And the series proves that is true when you realise that it still looks good after all these years. This is an excellent DVD set. The whole thing has been digitally restored and looks and sounds great.
I personally don't like this show as much as shows made by ITC but it clearly does have very good scripts, acting and production. It is still entertaining nearly 40 years after it was made.
Taking its name from the Cockney rhyming slang for flying squad, (Sweeney Todd) this is one of televisions most physical cop shows. It features crook thumping detectives Reagan and Carter. They race around London in their gold coloured Ford Granada. Reagan has little time for rules and regulations and is always in conflict with his superiors. He is a heavy drinker and is always in bed with another woman. Understandably he is estranged from his wife. Carter is the rookie who is reliable and tough.
The show was made at a time when the police did not record interviews with criminals. This is reflected in the show and these fictional characters use no nonsense and brutal methods to get a result.
The show used a former Flying Squad officer, (Jack Quarrie) to advise the scriptwriters. It was also claimed that the real police had such officers as Reagan and Carter and it raised public controversy over the reality of police methods and ethics.
The show has swearing and violence but it also has humour. Two feature films were also made as a spin off from the series. The Sweeny ended in 1978.

This is a classic British TV series and the DVD set is well presented.
