Book Description

1 Oct 2008
Sustainable architecture is gaining in popularity as people develop an ever-greater commitment to preserving the Earth s resources. This practical new guide contains an illustrated reference section covering all aspects of sustainable building and decoration, from insulation to solar panels and from light bulbs to kitchen countertops. Thirty case studies, featuring sustainably built homes from around the world, from an ambassador s official residence to a rooftop extension, offer inspiration. The informative text takes a balanced and realistic view of the techniques employed and explains the decisions made in the construction of each building. Generously illustrated with photographs and plans, The Sustainable Home will appeal as much to anyone designing an entirely new eco house as to those seeking to spruce up or extend their own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked ideas without the weird 28 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
What a joy to find a book on sustainable building that isn't full of weird houses built out of old tyres. The reference section at the front is useful (sections on construction techniques, wall paints etc.). I bought the book because I am redocorating my home and wanted to see if I could do it in a more environmentally friendly way, but there is information that would be helpful if I was building an extension or planning to build a house from scratch. The 30? houses at the back are beautifully illustrated with pages of photographs and floor plans, which I always find very helpful in navigating the buildings. The author explains each house and the eco decisions made in relation to them. I'd definitely recommend this book. I have also used the tips from the kitchen planning section and the floor and wall coveringsf or my own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and insightful... 28 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
My mother-in-law bought me this book because she knows I am interested in living a green lifestyle. I only live in a small flat and am strapped for cash so building a house or extending my own home isn't an option, yet I still found this an interesting read. The range of houses is good and they are very well photographed. The refrence section proved helpful too. It seems to cover most things from Building techniques, types of insulation, ground source heat pumps, underfloor heating .... but it also covers basics like light bulbs, carpets, furnieture choices and fabrics all of which have helped me plan small, but still important changes to my own home. The range of eco products available now surprsied me. A good reference book.

1.0 out of 5 stars An Honest Review 11 Jan 2009
By Bertie
Format:Hardcover
Sustainable is a very loosely applied title for this book of mostly extravagantly built houses from around the world. Several concrete monstrosities hardly qualify. Reference section is weak. Odd that the 5 star reviews were written on the same date. UK home builders are better served elsewhere. Try 'Green Homes' or 'The Whole House Book'
