Product Description

Review

'Tania Carver delivers a dark, sexy thriller in her relentlessly suspenseful debut. If you haven't discovered this talented newcomer yet, hurry. She's on her way to the top (Richard Montanari 'With a plotline that snares from the off, and a comprehensive cast of characters, Carver's debut novel sets the crime thriller bar high. A hard act to follow’ )

Irish Examiner ('Creepy…this often gripping detective story contains some genuinely shocking moments’ )

Bella ('You'll need a strong stomach for this debut’ )

Mirror ('Distrubing yet engaging’ )

Book Description

A powerful, gruesome debut in the tradition of Tess Gerritsen and Mo Hayder

By crime reader TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is an enjoyable crime novel about a vicious serial killer who murders heavily pregnant women after first cutting out and stealing their babies. Fortunately for someone like me with a fairly weak stomach, while the subject matter is gruesome, the gore is kept to a minimum so it can be read easily enough by a squeamish reader. The main characters are likeable and engaging, and we get to know the victims a little bit before they are murdered. It's well paced on the whole, although maybe a little too much about the relationship between the two main characters slows it down in parts. I did find the motive for the killings slightly peculiar, I didn't think it was entirely plausible, and the connections between the villains quite bizarre given their history, however all in all, a good read, and I would look out for more by this author in the future.

I liked it 25 Feb 2012
By Lainy
Format:Paperback
A killer is targeting pregnant woman and wants one thing from them, the baby. The story starts with a double murder, brutal in it's ferocity and nature. The police enlist the help of Marina Esposito, a profiling psychologist whose last interaction with the team still haunts her and this case will take all of her focus and dedication.

It is a very busy story, lots of different ties and links going on. I felt like this was book number two as it kept referring back to Marina's last case she worked on with them and how it had a huge impact on her and DI Phil Brennan's relationship. It eventually explains it out what happened but until it does you feel your missing quite a vital part of what happened between them.

The subject matter of someone removing unborns from their mothers stomach and what follows after is quite horrific, the details aren't the most gruesome I have read but due to what it is it does make for unsettling reading. It is a good crime story with lots going on and a decent introduction to this author's writing however for me there was something lacking which is why I am giving it a three. I did enjoy the story and a lot of my questions where answered but there was some things left out or not explained so 3/5 for me and I will read more by this author.

Straight to DVD.... 16 Mar 2011
By Jack
Format:Paperback
If we compare this book to a film...then it's a straight to DVD movie bypassing the cinema...probably made for channel five...late at night when people have the weakest of attention spans.

The plot is promising...but the delivery is woeful. It's the writing...allow me to quote...
"he sighed deep"
Even I know it's "deeply"
Another one..."she paused,thought."
The writing is stop/start all the way through. There is cliche after cliche and very forced character structure and dialogue.

Ihad to speed read most of it as the writing became very irksome. In the hands of mo hayder this storyline would have produced a world class read. The storyline / plot / killer are all quite clever but the delivery is just so awful you wonder how so many mistakes didn't get noticed...(another thing that struck me was the "CIO"... I am sure it's "sio" in every other crime novel?!)

As a consumer I should be entitled to my money back when the product is poorly made. A poor storyline I can stomach...blatant mistakes I cannot (grammar and otherwise)

REview of 'Surrogate'.
Once again a very good novel by Tania Carver. Again good characters and a well devised story. Another recommended read.

Unreadable
I couldn't finish it, the language was so awful. Did the author even have an editor? The plot may well have been compelling as some of the reviews have said, but I'll never know. Read more
