Review

‘Stylish and amusing.’ Entertainment Weekly

‘Wonderfully smart and sexy and witty and moving.’ Publishers’ Weekly (one of its ‘Best Books of 2004’)

‘A small masterpiece of erotic writing.’ Leon Wieseltier

‘“The Surrender” is a brave book…in its earnest attempt to do justice to the transcendent dimensions of a profane act.’ New York Times Book Review

‘The art of talking dirty may have come late to women, but when we get it – and Toni Bentley has – the pages burst into flames.’ Nancy Friday

Product Description

From ‘The Story of O’ to ‘The Sexual Life of Catherine M.’, readers have been enthralled with sexually subversive memoirs by women. But even those erotic classics don’t navigate the psychosexual terrain that Toni Bentley covers when she meets a lover who introduces her to a radical and unexpected pleasure.

‘Ms Bentley belongs to the tradition of D.H. Lawrence, Norman Mailer, Henry Miller and Anais Nin, which sees sex as an avenue to the mystical and sublime.’ New York Times

Few women do it, and even fewer will admit to it. But in Toni Bentley’s daring and intimate memoir she pulls the sheets back on an erotic experience that has been forbidden since the Bible.

‘The Surrender’ is a witty, intelligent and eloquent exploration of one woman’s obsession that will be sure to leave readers questioning their own desires.

This book is like no other I have read. It is Not erotic. But if truth is arousing to you, you will find it provocative.
The subject matter is really about trust. Trust in others and finally herself.
There are turns of phrase and and twinkling observations that are surprisingly powerful .
Ms Bentley writes this way because it matters to her.
Its brutal candour I found refreshing.
I was inspired to read her other books. None of them come close to the emotional fluency and presence of this one.
Its almost a shame its about anal sex because its such fun to read & I would like to lend it out more often !
Then again what else could be so scary/thrilling/joyous as said act:>

try it , you'll like it,

Arnold

Not for everyone 24 Jan 2007
This erotic memoir is not going to be for everyone, but if you liked The Story of O or The Sexual Life of Catherine M it might appearl. Since the Bible, certain sexual practises have been forbidden. Apparently few women do it, and even fewer will admit to it - but when Ms Bentley meets a new lover who introduces her to new pleasures of the flesh she embarks on a journey of discovery. Darling, intimate and eloquent this may be - sexy it just isnt. Not really one to read out loud to your Mum, or indeed in public, and a few too many references to finding God for my liking.
