Anyone in search of scottish family history will eventually be asked "Have you consulted Black's Surnames?". George Black presents the derivation, spelling variations (and these can be many), geographical origins and earliest known records for most if not all of the surnames of Scotland in an objective manner. This is not one of the "Have I got a tartan for you!" books, nor is it one of the books claiming sept or clan status for the most unlikely names. Instead, it presents the family historian with an academic but readable background of the highland clans and lowland families which all contribute to Scotland's story. Fascinating.

Black's is the definitive work on Scottish surnames, despite its age (it was first published in 1946 by New York Public Library). You can rely on Black to have covered almost every source publication before that year, but works published since then may very well have material (and so names) unknown to Black. In addition, Black had to depend on existing indexes within books, and many of these in Victorian times omitted the "less important" people. As a result, surname examples earlier than that shown by Black are possible (my own copy has a number of inserted notes). Nevertheless, you would find it impossible to find a better book on the subject.

This is an excellent publication for everyone interested in family history, not necessarily just with Scottish connections.
