5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully compiled by Brainiac 5 18 Jan 2014
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 2:16 Mins
This is one huge 312-page thick dossier-like book made like it was put together by Brainiac 5.

The quality of the book is great. I love the textured steel design of the cover. It's hardcover and they have used good thick low gloss paper.

The book is essentially features the commentary of Brainiac 5 as he recounts the history of Superman back to planet Krypton up to the present year 2013. Brainiac covers the story arcs, time travels, characters and villains. There are even journal entries written by Superman that he somehow managed to source, as well as the many Daily Planet newspaper cuttings.

The materials are arranged in sort of a chronologically manner so it's easy to follow along. It's a nice way to present the history. If you have been following Superman on and off, this book is going to fill in the blanks for you.

As to the completeness, well, the scope of Superman's comic universe is just too immense to cover everything but this book does a good job. One reviewer mentioned missing 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths. I'm sure there will be discrepancies because of the ongoing nature of comic books but I'm not a hardcore Superman fan to be able to notice them.

Images in the book are wonderfully selected to accompany the text. The visuals are generally well reproduced. There are several panels that were printed as if they came out from a inkjet printer that's running out of ink so you can see streak marks. But those streak marks are only on the comic art and not the white border surrounding it. Was it an effect to simulate that the photo (panel) is old, or is it really a printing problem? Either way, it does not work. But other than that, the artworks, the colours are fantastic.

Highly recommended to all Superman fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars As cohesive an "in-universe" biography of Superman as you're going to get 1 Jan 2014
By Absent-Minded Professor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is an interesting coffee-table book published rather late during the 75th anniversary year of the first appearance of Superman. The simplest, most straightforward short description is that it comprises an in-DC-Universe biography of the greatest super-hero of the 21st century compiled from the perspective of his 31st-century comrade in the Legion of Super-Heroes, Brainiac 5. Generally speaking, it combines commentary from Brainiac 5 with documentary material from the Man of Steel's own journals, news reports, and sundry other faux “sources” to form a more-or-less cohesive narrative stretching from background on his lost homeworld of Krypton to the 2013 present. It does fall short of being a comprehensive history of the character in that virtually no account is taken of materials published before ca. 1985 when the Crisis on Infinite Earths remade the DC Universe and was followed by the 1986-1987 Man of Steel mini-series reimagining the flagship character with a stripped-down, more cohesive continuity that would prevail for approximately the next 25 years. But over the last quarter-century, as far as I can tell, most everything, every major event and story-line, is reconciled into a fairly organic whole that hangs together remarkably well. There are various contradictions intrinsic to the ongoing nature of the comic-book medium, with its ongoing, serialized, continuous narrative inevitably necessitating period rewritings of the internal history along the way (termed “retcons” for “retroactive continuity”), but even these are accounted for as far as possible via "Brainiac 5's" acknowledgment of the various chronal discontinuities that have become virtually a staple of DC's story-telling – with the most recent Flashpoint Event that gave birth to the current “New 52” and its sometimes radically different DC Universe that began in 2011 being frankly acknowledged in the final few pages. Even if you have read Superman continuously from the mid 1980s to the present (which I have not, mainly reading a few years from the beginning as well as the last half-dozen years or so, with scattered specific story-lines in between), I can imagine fans of the character paging through this large volume with immense enjoyment, reveling in the variety of art selected from across that period, generally presented as if photographs posted into a scrapbook, with attendant commentary and textual pieces telling the overall story as if from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints. I know that I have done so, since receiving it from my wife and son for Christmas.

I love superman next to Batman and Cpt America. Along with Wondcer Woman and Batman, they make the Trinity. They are the first in the world of DC.
5.0 out of 5 stars Superman and his Reminisces ocver 75 years 14 Feb 2014

This companion volume to the batman files though not as gimicky still shines as a veritable historical compilation of the complete history of superman. All you need to know about the man of steel can be found inside and the images found within are very very extensive and presented in a very stylistic manner. DC shines in their hero histories and this book is no exception .

This is a great collection of superman facts and information in general. My only set back is that i have the Batman file, which includes so much more info. and stories. The Superman files feels like it was just thrown together in time for Man of Steel to come out. don't get me wrong i love Superman, i think i was just expecting a little more depth
