This installment of the Gil Mayo series brings murder close to home for Detective Superintendent Gil Mayo. One of his daughter's best friends is found savagely murdered in a local hotel. At the same time, Mayo has not heard from his wandering daughter, Julia, for some time, and he becomes very worried when he finds she is not in Texas as he expected.
The mystery doesn't revolve much around Julia's disappearance, but focuses on the family and friends of the murdered daughter as suspects, as would be expected. The plot development is deft as it often is with Eccles' books in this series. I found the story engrossing. The writing is up to par for Eccles, a very competent author, if not well known, in the British/Scottish mystery and police procedural genre.
In many of the previous books in the series, Eccles puts more effort into developing the characters related to the plot than those of her continuing series characters. But in this book the author does more to bring the reader into Mayo's personal life and his living arrangements with his girlfriend, and we get a little deeper into Inspector Abigail Moon's mind with regard to her boyfriend and her desire to head up a big case all by herself. The rest of the CID staff members have their usual bit parts, and Eccles keeps them nicely in character.
This is another pretty good entry in a series worth reading.
