Product Description

Up until a few days ago, nothing extraordinary had ever happened in ten year old Josh Wunderkind’s life – except eating a whole pot of pasta by himself. But that all changed after a mammoth-sized bird hit him smack on the face with a glob of neon green bird poop, triggering his superhuman Wunderkind ability and leaving him with the responsibility of caring for a baby bird he named Max. Now Josh was just like his older brother and twin sister Madison-super extraordinary! But what Josh didn’t realize was that being superhuman wasn’t all fun and games. And things only got more complex in Josh’s life when his two siblings and a couple neighborhood friends persuade him to lead a super crime-solving, neighborhood news team—the Gumshoe News Crew. But not before they agree on the Super Secret and complete Gumshoe Boot Camp. Find out what the Super Secret is. Will the Gumshoe News Crew complete boot camp? Or will Josh let his team down?

This is a fast-paced early chapter book with a great gang of kids and a pseudo-parrot (you’ll have to read it to find out what that means!). Josh, his brother Jake and sister Madison have superpowers – but Josh’s are rather more dramatically revealed (and more powerful) than theirs. There’s plenty of goo involved, that’s all I’ll reveal.

They join forces with some friends to right some wrongs, a venture which involves maps, ingenuity, commonsense, technology and duct tape. It also involves some Robin Hood-like conclusions.

Altogether it was a fun read with lovely touches, great and believable characters, and plenty of jelly beans. Should be plenty more fun on the way with the Gumshoe News Crew!

Bonus points for the super illustrations!

5.0 out of 5 stars Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew 5 May 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew is the humorous adventure of how Josh Wunderkind got his superhuman powers and used them to fight evil with the help of his brother, sister, and their friends.

Josh Wunderkind is just an ordinary kid, but his brother Jake and sister Madison have managed to carry on the Wunderkind family tradition and exhibit amazing abilities. Josh is about to give up all hope at finding his power when a giant bird attacks him with glowing poop. Strange things begin to happen and the only explanation seems to lie within the unusual bird poop. Can Josh learn to master his abilities and help the group, known as The Gumshoe News Crew, fight crime in their town?

Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew is a wonderful early chapter book filled with excitement and silly antics. Young readers will be pulled into the action right along with Josh and the Crew and will be captivated to the end.

I like that the story is easy to read and flows well so children won't have any problems following along or understanding the plot. Josh and the Gumshoe Crew is an all around enjoyable read. I highly recommend picking up a copy.
4.0 out of 5 stars For Your Little Gumshoe A Great Read! 21 Sep 2014

Josh is just an ordinary kid who does ordinary things with his friends and siblings. When he accidentally gets super powers he is not sure what is happening. He also at least at first does not have much control over them either. His brother Jake concocts a training exercise to help him and friends.

As the story unfolds, his super powers come in handy as he leads four other kids through the training and subsequently a adventure to re-obtain stolen items from his baby sister, Mom, and neighbors. The thief is not at all who one would think as a thief.

Josh does learn to work together with his team and that all of them have something to offer and that super powers are not always useful or needed. The book winds up with the creation of the "gumshoe news crew" who will no doubt have more adventures and crime seeking explorations in subsequent books.
This is a humorous first chapter book in a series aimed at 6-12 year olds, although I think it is more suited for 8-12. I found myself chuckling at a few things and I know kids will too.
The book was a fairly easy read so the youngest of new readers will not have much difficulty. The older reader will love the humor throughout and should be able to read the book with ease.

My only disappointment was that the book left me hanging and wanting more.
Great book. 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detective story with a difference 27 May 2014

Kids love to read about other kids doing amazing things. This story has some wonderful characters with the special abilities other children would wish for. They form a team and everyone has a role. Young readers will be able to escape into their imaginations and enjoy the adventures of Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew. Melissa Perry Moraja has written a wonderful series of books – this is book five and they just keep getting better.
5.0 out of 5 stars A great read for read to me's and young readers 21 May 2014
By Christina Weigand - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Josh Wunderkind thinks that unlike his brother and twin sister, that he is an ordinary ten-year old. That is until a bird poops on his head and a baby raptor adopts him as its mother.

Josh’s superpowers begin to emerge, but they are uncontrolled and untrained. The three siblings along with two friends set out for Josh to learn control.

Through his older brother’s Boot Camp and the establishment of the Gumshoe News Crew, the group experiences several adventures and solves a mystery or two along the way. They learn about their individual strengths and when to rely on others and working together to solve dilemmas.

Ms. Moraja leads the reader on a series of adventures in which the reader will learn about accepting themselves for who they are and turning to others when you need help. Readers will be led on an exciting adventure as Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew learn how to control their powers and solve mysteries. This book is a fun read that will keep the readers hoping that Josh and his crew can solve the cases without too much trouble.

This reviewer believes Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew is definitely worth the read for the read-to-me group through the young readers.
4.0 out of 5 stars A fast fun read 19 May 2014

Intended for a slightly younger audience than my usual books, this story was a super-quick read. Charming and witty, it moved swiftly, narrated by the slightly hapless Josh, who is happy to finally find his super power, but is pretty worried about messing things up, and with some reason. The tone and humor are perfect for the target audience, and were enough to keep this alleged adult turning pages too.

I really had only two complaints about Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew: for one, the role of the baby bird in the story is sufficiently unreal that it needs to be very clear that there is a lot of magical stuff going on there. He learns to fly in a single, 5-minute lesson? The author is careful to be sure the readers know that in the ordinary way of things, touching a wild animal or baby chick is a very bad idea, however, which is good. My second complaint is that the ending was rather sudden. The story hints at a further mystery they will need to solve--but we are apparently to be left to figure that one out in the next book. No fair!

This looks like a great series for readers making the transition from easy-reader books to more advanced chapter books.

I received an advance review copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest, not a positive, review. The opinions expressed in this review are my honest opinions.
