Book Description

1 July 2011
This beautifully illustrated hardback is a unique gift to Peake fans everywhere. Every Sunday on the Isle of Sark, Mervyn Peake would tell his children stories about pirates, shipwrecks and the Wild West. He illustrated his spontaneous stories with delightfully vivid drawings of the characters in his tales, but never set down words to go with them. Now, decades after Peake's death, world-renowned fantasy writer (and friend of the Peakes) Michael Moorcock has written verses to go with Peake's drawings. The result of this star collaboration - by turns funny, surprising and haunting - is accompanied by an illuminating and touching introduction by Moorcock. Duckworth is publishing The Sunday Books to mark the centenary of Peake's birth, which will be commemorated around the world.

'It is a match made in fantasy heaven: legendary genre author Michael Moorcock has written a series of verses to go with illustrations drawn by the late Gormenghast creator Mervyn Peake to entertain his children.' --The Guardian

'[Peake's books] are actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience.' --C.S. Lewis

'[Michael Moorcock] is the master storyteller of our time.' --Angela Carter

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for fans of Mervyn Peake 16 July 2011
By Cole Thornton TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
My father collected Mervyn Peake - I collected Michael Moorcock. Maybe my liking for the latter came from my reading of the former. The Titus trilogy - together with Tolkien and Lewis - was part of my world for many years - and still is I suppose. But I knew very little about the former - although I grew to recognise his many illustrations in the Radio Times.

I came across this in Blackwells' in Oxford this morning and my usual 10 minute morning coffee break stretched to an hour. It is not a long read but it is a fascinating one. I learned much about the man and his life that I had not known before - but also looked at many Peake illustrations and drawings - some for his children - that I had never seen before. These accompany stories that he told his children - tales of pirates and shipwrecks etc. Didn't have time to read them all but they would be just as good for children today (I hope!). Moorcock has contributed some verses to go with the some of the illustrations.

But it is not just the content that is so fascinating. The book is also a splendid piece of book design - lovely to look at and to handle. And very welcome in these days of so much standard book packaging. If you have any interest in Peake, Moorcock or fantasy fiction then I do strongly recommend this to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something different 12 July 2011

I bought this book since I am a huge fan of Michael Moorcock and thought it would be interesting t see how he did doing a children's book based on Mervyn Peake's drawings. It is not a book for children - especially young children. Some children may get it, others will not. Adults can enjoy it. I found it rather amusing.

I bought a second copy to give to my cousin's son. As I said in it, he can enjoy the pictures now and the stories later.
