BBC Review

In April 2001, New Zealand songwriter Neil Finn convened various stars together under the project name 7 Worlds Collide (after a line from Crowded House's song Distant Sun) in aid of Médicins Sans Frontières. In December 2008 many of the same folk gathered in Auckland for a two-week group hug-cum-charity bash, this time to create original studio work in aid of Oxfam. The result is this sprawling, but always amiable, collection of campfire sing-alongs and fruitful jamming.

The Sun Came Out's predecessor was a live album of Finn Brothers classics, but Neil’s older sibling Tim is absent this time. But while devotees of Split Enz and Crowded House may be disappointed, there are still treats aplenty as contributors include most of Wilco (sans Nels Cline), as well as old friends like Radiohead's Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway, Lisa Germano, Johnny Marr and Finn's two sons, Liam and Elroy.

There's obviously something in the air Down Under that stirs the melodic muse. This certainly explains why Jeff Tweedy and co's last offering – partly recorded during these sessions – sounded so breezy. The presence of local talents Don McGlashan and Bic Runga is vital, too – the former's old band, the underrated Mutton Birds, dealt in a similar vein of melodic adult pop.

It's as a double album that weaknesses are revealed (it is also available on just the one disc, mind), as a little self-indulgence creeps in at the edges; but as its title implies, it contains mainly inoffensively cheery songs, sometimes from the most surprising of places. Selway delivers some ghostly folk wonderment on The Witching Hour, and fans of Wilco will love not only Jeff Tweedy's solo What Could Have Been but also getting to hear bassist John Stirratt when left to his own devices alongside multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone.

Lynchpin Finn is wonderful throughout, and Marr lends his chiming, six-stringed uplift to songs that could otherwise fall short of greatness. Ultimately there's enough here for a great single album – the judicious editing comes down to you. --Chris Jones

CD Description

The first 7 Worlds Collide album, a collection of amazing musical talents from across the globe in aid of Medicin Sans Frontiers, was a unique live performance, fusing the varied talents of a stellar cast across a range of cover versions to create a series of shows that culminated in the live album of the same name.
Seven years after that project, instigator Neil Finn has upped the ante with the new 7 Worlds Collide project. The Sun Came Out -- a double album of original songs created and recorded by many of the original cast alongside notable new additions in an intense three weeks in his native New Zealand. This time the beneficiaries of this album will be Oxfam. Familiar faces from the original album abound, Johnny Marr, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead but this album, first and foremost presents the listener with new songs rather than interpretations of old favourites. The Sun Came Out also features a whole host of new guest talents such as KT Tunstall and Wilco and heart stopping firsts, including Phil Selway’s songwriting and vocal debut as well as dream collaborations such as those between Johnny Marr and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy; and KT Tunstall and Neil Finn.

A great slow burner 11 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
This album contains a collection of some of my favourite artists, including a couple of people I'd never heard of before.
After Neil's '7 Worlds Collide' venture I was really looking forward to hearing what the 'gang' could produce in terms of new music.

On first listen two tracks which really stood out for me were Don McGlashan's 'Girl make your own mind up' and Phil Selways 'The ties that bind'.
Also, the Johnny Marr track 'Run in the Dust', contains one of Johnny's best vocal's, is it just me, or is there something Lennon'esq in his vocal delivery(?)

It's not the easiest album to initially connect with, but I think when you do, it will become a firm favourite on the stereo.
The quality and breadth of songs on offer are really outstanding, more so when you think it was written/recorded in just a three week period.
More of a mellow 'Desert Sessions'?

Once again Neil and co. have produced a cracking album, this time using all new material.
A slow burner which I'm sure will reward well into the future.

Great album, but a little irritated I purchased digitally before realizing that it's not complete - it's missing the KT Tunstall tracks. This should be noted as an incomplete album.

Neil Finn is the most underatted amazing musicians of the latter part of the last and this century,
Penning many timeless classics from the days of Split Enz and "i got You" to the feel good tracks of the Amazing Crowded House with tracks such as weather with you and four seasons in one day., but there are many strings to Neils Bow and as a well known and loved artist that when he wanted to do a charity cd he had all the names wanting to be part of it,
so over a couple of weeks over christmas they threw together one of the best compilation cds I have ever heard..

this album so deserves many gold stars for its eclectic mix of styles and voice and Like my Fellow Frenz stated it
"So my Frenz, give this one a try...at 50p a track and with all proceeds going to OXFAM you can't go wrong"
