'Delightful - an enchanting story' JUDITH LENNOX --Judith Lennox

Product Description

A secret love that will haunt a family for ever

England 1918. Lady Helen believes her parents when they say she will never find a better husband than Richard, but when he returns to the Front, she begins to wonder just who it is she has married. His letters home are cold and distant – and Helen realises that she has made a terrible mistake. Then Oliver Donovan enters her life and they begin an affair that leaves Helen pregnant and alone – she is forced to surrender her precious baby.

Over twenty years pass and a second war is ravaging Europe, but that is not the only echo of the past to haunt the present. Laura Drummond is caught in a tragic love affair of her own and when she is forced to leave London during the Blitz, she turns to the mother she never knew.

More About the Author

Mary Nichols is a well-established novelist who writes in two different genres, family sagas for Allison & Busby and historical romance for Mills & Boon. She is the author of the best selling saga, The Summer House which was on the long list for the Romantic Novelists Association Romantic Novel of the Year award 2009 and is still selling strongly. Others are The Fountain, The Kirilov Star and The Girl on the Beach, all published by Allison & Busby in print and as ebooks.
Of the thirty-plus books she has written for Mills & Boon most are Regency, but others have backgrounds taken from the English Civil War right through to Victorian times. The most recent form a series of linked books about crime in Georgian Society and how it was dealt with by a group of aristocratic gentlemen who fall in love while doing it. They are: The Captain's Mysterious Lady, (short listed for the Romantic Novelists' Association Love Story of the Year award 2010), The Viscount's Unconventional Bride, Lord Portman's Troublesome Wife, Sir Ashley's Mettlesome Match and The Captain's Kidnapped Beauty (shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists' Association RoNA Rose award 2011). These, including some of her backlist, have also been published as ebooks.
Mary Nichols is also the author of The Mother of Necton, a biography of her grandmother who was a village nurse and midwife from the early years of the 20th century until the formation of the National Health Service in 1948. It is out of print in its original hardback form published by Breedon Books in 2000, but has been updated and re-issued in paperback by The Larks Press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 4 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of the best books I have read for a while. The author's research on WWII is spot-on, especially of London during the Blitz. Much has been written with a similar background but the way that the characters and their stories are interwoven into historical detail is excellent. This is one of those books that truly takes you into another world- Just make sure you have plenty of time for this wonderful romance because you certainly won't want to put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars a lovely book 9 Jun 2010
By Mrs. T. SALMON TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was the sort of book that is difficult to put down, i found the characters likable and i wanted to know what happened next.It might be a little predictable in places but that did not spoil it for me, sometimes there is the need to curl up with a book that has charm and a real story, i would recomend it for a read on holiday as it is a relaxing read. i will not tell the whole story as i really feel that spoils the book but is set mainly in world war II with flash backs to the first war. i hope you enjoy it as much as me

This book had me crying me eyes out before I'd even finished the prologue! It is a really enjoyable read, the characters are believable and their story totally absorbing. The wartime scenarios painted by the author were clearly well researched, adding to the reality of the storyline. I would highly recommend it - enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing............... 23 Nov 2010
By Mrs R
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've read many books that are classed in the same category as this, The Legacy, A Place of Secrets, The Forgotten Garden, House at Riverton all of which I enjoyed or thought were true to their reviews. Which is why when I saw the reviews for this book I had high hopes but I was hugely disappointed. It's basically a glorified Mills & Boon, the plot is totally transparent, dull and incredibly wooden. It was like reading a badly acted play, with no depth to any of the characters at all. I almost gave up but wanted to plough on to the cringeworthy end. I constantly felt I was rolling my eyes at the predictable plot and as for the title, it bears hardly any significance to the story at all.

After finishing the book I had a look at the authors other titles which did in fact include Mills & Boon - lesson learned? Always check what the author has written previously. I'm sure it suited some but I'm looking for something a bit more interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK! 13 April 2011
Format:Paperback
When I looked at the cover and back of this book it had all the ingredients that I go for, however, as I read this it didn't live up to my expectations. Overall I found the plot quite weak and predictable, the people seemed transparent with no real depth inside them, and quite honestly it had similarities to a Mills & Boon saga. However, I did find the scenes centered around the WW2 blitz very well described and well researched and felt I was there. It was a shame that the story dragged on as it came to the end where I'm afraid I am guilty of skimming over the surface. I so much wanted to like this book as well. The story should have been shorter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not terrible, but not great 21 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This book sounded so good and the first chapter I enjoyed, after that it went down hill. The story was predictable, but I could cope with that. What really annoyed me was that I felt no emotion from the characters, all these terrible things were happening and this book left me with nothing. I did't find it very interesting Don't waste your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read. Overly wordy. . 18 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Thought this would be a good read but was very disappointed. The story line could have been quite gripping but it is an overly wordy book where it takes a long time to say not very much. Sections dealing with wartime experiences including reference to real life people and events did not convince - a bit of a pot boiler this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read 13 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I ordered this book as it had many good reviews on Amazon but was really disappointed. The characters and storyline are so predictable and uninteresting. I found the writing to be very dull and uninspiring. Sometime after starting this book I discovered the author writes for Mills and Boon, had I realised this I would never have ordered the book in the first place. I am afraid I could not finish this book as it did not stimulate my brain at all.
