It's very easy to get caught up in the lives of the characters portrayed in this novel, each of them has their own flaws (including and especially, the main protagonist Alice) which are on constant display rather than being hidden from the reader to show a false perfection. But then the story in this novel takes place in the very imperfect world of Crawemere, a small English village situated on an entrance to Hell.

While you may be tempted to think of Buffy straight away, and there are a few subtle nods towards Joss Whedon's series, this is very different. All of the inhabitants of the village are well aware of their unique position and exploit it to the fullest degree giving way to some very nasty characters indeed.

The story contains many mythical names that sound familiar or you think you already know. This is because there is an infusion of British Mythology throughout, and it is very easy to find yourself immersed in this fantastical world of Demons and magic.

Written from the perspective of teenagers, it would no-doubt appeal to an audience of that age more, but it wasn't hard to think back and remember people that fit the profiles of these youngsters perfectly in the place I grew up. It was also very easy to find myself rooting for the main protagonists, Alice and Johnny to achieve their goals against the constant adversity presented to them throughout the story.

It's a quick and satisfying read. Basically if you like Supernatural stories, magic and mythology you will love this book.

They say writers should read outside their genre, so that's what I did. I found Sulphur Diaries hard to get into, but that probably says more about my age than it does about the book. When my brain had adjusted to Teen Supernatural (very popular at the moment) I began to appreciate that the author can write, she knows her market and her voice is spot on for it. I did wonder how much editorial input there had been; for example, I might have advised structuring differently. This is a promising introduction to Georgina Kamsika. It will be interesting to see how she develops her undoubted talent.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, if not thought provoking novel that leaves one eager for more. In a society where morals are evil and consequences are nonexistent, nothing is as it seems.

The way Georgina intertwines a variety of mythologies without ever bogging down the story is downright refreshing. Those who are familiar with mythology will definitely appreciate the subtle nuances that helps create this world. Equally powerful is the way she portrays these mythical creatures in a way that is both plausible and real.

On the surface, this tale speaks of the struggles Alice 'Murph' endures as she tries to find love, friendship, and the truth in a world where goodness is seen as weakness. In a world so filled with evil it is fascinating to see how Alice and her friends come to define what is good and what is wrong.

Cazza and Johnny are Alice's closest friends. Together they are the living embodiments conscience in a society where none exists. Through magic, love and loyalty they unravel the village's dark secrets, and learn that some things come at too high a price.

Beneath the romance, friendship, and high school shenagins is a chilling and at times downright disturbing undercurrent. This tale gives a unnerving glimpse at what society could become if we cease to think beyond our own selfish desires. It certainly makes one re-evaluate one's thinking, and the importance of morals in our world today.

As I've mentioned before nothing is as it seems and everything comes at a price. The ending alone speaks volumes of this theme and the fact that in this world there is no such thing as black and white, typical heroes and mindless villains.

If I were to pick a single statement that sums up this tale I would have to use the quote from BSG: Razor 'You make your decisions, and in the end you are those decisions'. I definitely recommend this tale for anyone who is looking for a thought provoking story, one that leaves you guessing right till the end and wanting more!
