Once described as the greatest voice of the 20th century, Mario Lanza burst onto the scene in 1947 when his performance at the Hollywood Bowl led to a seven year contract with MGM. Four years later he made the film with which he has become synonymous; that of Enrico Caruso, who he portrayed in The Great Caruso. There were certainly many striking similarities between the two singers, leading some critics to label Lanza as 'the new Caruso.' The other film with which Mario Lanza's name is forever linked is The Student Prince, although he doesn't appear in the film at all; after recording the soundtrack he walked off the set following a growing number of arguments with both the producer and director. The studio got a new actor to play the role, but had him mime to Mario's singing!

I hadn't heard this music since I had it on a 12 inch LP record. The CD sounds just as I remember the music, though it has probably a better quality of reproduction than I ever obtained from my LP. Timeless music, beautifully performed and for an unbelievable price. What more could I ask for?

Good enough recording but feel there are a few songs missing. I could be wrong but I've watched The Great Caruso many times and think there was a bigger choice of songs.I have a few Mario Lanza CD's and bought this one because I love both the films.

Atrocious sound. The RCA Student Prince is far better

This terrible-sounding CD presents the Student Prince with crackly, distorted sound. The label that produced it insults listeners with sounds that suggest it has been mastered from a dirty, scratched LP found in a grime-ridden garage. If the Student Prince is your prime target, be sure to go for the RCA version - it's the same performance but with much better, far cleaner sound. However, do note that the RCA pairs The Student Prince with The Desert Song, rather than The Great Caruso.

After viewing Mario Lanza on the PBS series American Masters ,I looked for an inexpensive CD to showcase this brilliant artists work.
This CD is a recording of an aged rather warped vinyl record of some of his better known work, complete with bumps and other sound artifacts.
I am aware of difficulties he had with the various hollywood studios so his work may be obscure but
honestly why would anyone market a product like this?
