5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Television 6 July 2006
I purchased this DVD only after hearing about it through the Radio 2's Steve Wright show.

Cracker still goes down as one of the best television shows of the 90's even though it dwindled towards the last series.

Jimmy Mcgoverns recent drama The Street is simply incredible. Superb acting throughout each of the 6 stories. Episode 2 entitled "Stan" is worth the price of this DVD alone. This heart moving story features Jim Broadbent in one of his finest roles.

I cannot recommend this DVD strongly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it.. 5 Jun 2008
I watched series two last year and whilst I appreciated the fine acting I found it very depressing, especially the last one about the boy killing the baby[was pregnant at the time so possibly it affected me more].
I had never seen Series one but thought I would give it a go,again, being the bargain hunter that I am,for under seven quid it was indeed that,a bargain.
I can honestly say I enjoyed series one much more than series 2.
Whilst its still,at heart,a grimy northern kitchen sink drama,I still thought the stories were more light-hearted,apart from the last episode about domestic violence.
I love Timothy Spall in anything and he pops up in both series but the episode with him and the asylum seeker tickled the life out of me.
Lots of famous faces in this series such as the great Sue Johnson,Jim Broadbent & Jane Horrocks.
I enjoyed this series very much and I think in the coming years it will be looked back on as a fantastic example of how great british made telly can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Grim up North 9 Aug 2009
I finally caught an episode of the street half way through the third series. This show had been highly recommended to me by my mother, but for some reason i never got round to watching it.After one episode of the third series,i decided to go back to the first and purchased the dvd from Amazon. The quality of the writing in this show is exceptional, with Jimmy Govern writing the material that should come as no surprise. The acting is also of an equally high standard with some of the best British actors appearing in the show.

Above everything else,i think the one thing that makes this show work so well,is the ordinary people portrayed and the struggles they face, the storylines in each episode of the Show are so very believable and typical of the troubles endured by ordinary, working class, families.

Set some time aside and sit down and watch this brilliant show,if your like me you'll watch the dvd from start to finish,it really is compelling television, that's head and shoulders above anything else at the moment.I can't wait to recieve my dvd of the second series.

5.0 out of 5 stars TV as it should be 12 Sep 2008
A few months ago I gave up entirely on TV and ceased my satellite subscription in the USA (for those in other countries the idea of free to air television is aggressively discouraged here). The downside of this is that I miss the few sports events I used to enjoy (despite rampant over-sentimentality and jingoism at every turn). The upside is that I now have started to investigate other things to watch, amongst them this glorious BBC series. I have only watched three episodes so far, but this is what TV could, and SHOULD be if it hadn't long ago abdicated all social respponsibility in the frenzied search for the dollar provided by the lowest-common-denominator aesthetic of our increasingly decrepit society. Its not easy watching, but it is real, and it is honest. Its also true art that tells us things that matter about ourselves, and there is damned little of that happening nowdays!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as TV gets 30 Oct 2008
I missed most of this series first time round. I can't rememember what I was doing at the time but just hope it was good as this is one of the best bits of TV ever.

Each episode is a stand-alone story, although the main characters' lives are linked by the street and so they may appear again. Every story is a cracker, thoughtfully written and expertly brought to life by convincing actors. Timothy Spall is brilliant as always but he's by no means on his own.

Gritty, witty, powerful, sad, moving. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars British TV does not get any better than this! 25 May 2008
Verified Purchase
This is easily the finest series from the UK for a VERY long time! With a combination of a brilliant writer and a cast that does justice to his scripts it does not fail. The actors are world class and I was absolutely gob-smacked with the pure quality oozing from the show. The series is totally gripping. All episodes has a star turn but I was especially impressed with Neil Dudgeon with his performance as a teacher who has been falesly accused which was emotionally very draining. This series cannot be bettered for the range in content, topical issues and acting- what a true joy it was to be able to see this show. If you are reading this do not hestiate to buy it and make sure you pick up series two at the same time! You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Series 21 May 2008
This is one of the best series I have seen, I live in Australia and we have not had this series broadcast here at all, I just bought the dvds from the description of the series and I am so glad I did. The acting is brilliant and the story lines, well what can I say, very touching!! I wish there was a series 3!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Drama 15 April 2008
Verified Purchase
This series is a revelation.

Beautifully written, acted and filmed, it is the type of series that comes along but once a decade. Each episode concentrates on one character or family within the street but as the series progresses we also see the interaction of each character with all their neighbours which only serves to enhance the complex writing and give more depth to each character. The action is so involving that it is impossible for the audience not to get emotionally involved with the plight of each character.

I hope series 2 is as good.
