Review

‘Brilliantly plotted, stunningly written … I read this … in one go … if this isn't a hit, I am a monkey's uncle. And I don't think I am’. Independent on Sunday

‘The crucial thing about Michael Marshall Smith is that he is enormously readable… once you have started reading one of his books, you won’t want to stop until you have finished it… He’s in a class of his own… A master of ad absurdum gags [and] enough sensationally good throwaway wisecracks to fill a car park full of skips… He has the talent to become the inspiration to a generation of writers’
THE INDEPENDENT

‘Humour, a cracking pace and fluid prose… Sizzling… Michael Marshall Smith has a Crichton-like knack of attracting film studios’
THE TIMES

THE TIMES

‘Outstanding, highly original… fiercely funny, and hugely entertaining’
THE LITERARY REVIEW

‘As always with the fiercely inventive Smith, the rug of reality is exhilaratingly pulled from under the reader’s feet’
NEW SCIENTIST

‘No one writes better than Smith about love: how it’s won, how it’s lost. No one writes better about being wasted – by drugs, by drink, by time. Nigh-on unique’
i-D

‘A storytelling skill that can only be described as pure genius’

I happened to pick up this book in passing, read the backcover and thought ok this soons interesting. I had not read any of the author's work before but I just couldn't put in down. It was amazing, it just reached out and grabed you. If you enjoy a fast moving scary book go for it....I loved it and am now a comitted fan and have just finished reading The lonely Dead.

This is a good book, enjoyable, exciting. However, all the other reviews here (5 at the time of writing) are for a different book!
This book is 'Straw Men' by Martin J. Smith...the book they are reviewing is 'The Straw Men' by Michael Marshall (thriller pseudonym of Michael Marshall Smith). A totally different author and totally different book.

For what it's worth - if you are choosing between the two - go for Michael Marshall's book.

Having been recommended "Spares" by MMS I read it and liked it very much but when it ventured into fantasy/sci-fi I felt it wasn't for me although a good book. I found Straw Men in an oxfam bookshop and decided to give it a go. What a find. I absolutely loved this book. It is an absolute thriller with twists, turns, humour, horror all rolled into one by an author who is articulate and intelligent. What is not apparent is that this is the first of a trilogy. The second book is The Lonely Dead and the third is Blood of Angels. Have just finished The Lonely Dead which is good. Is quite fast paced and builds up on the relationships from the first book, and I think is probably setting up the finale (I hope) for the final book which I have just started, and looks very promising. I really do recommend this. The subject matter is not very pleasant but MM manages to do this without venturing into gore and too much detail which is pretty impressive. If you want a page turner, this is it. Enjoy. :)
