Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: 3-DVD Set, Box Set, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: THE STRAUSS DYNASTY shows the lives of Johann Strauss father and then his sons, the most famous of whom was Johann Strauss son, called Schani. The whole story is shown with the focus on family life of the Strausses and their career. Their music, the unforgettable waltzes, can be appreciated throughout. I especially like the scene in Paris where Johann Strauss presents his new waltz 'An Der Schonen Blauen Donau'. At first, no one seems to be keen, but later.... Other moments worth considering are the ones showing Schani's journey to Russia.

But the most important factor that talks for the mini series, I think, is the music itself. The director makes a perfect use of it, entailing it in most of the scenes as a background. The lovers of the waltzes will absolutely love the film. The effect of THE STRAUSS DYNASTY is similar to their music. As a famous orchestra director, Riccardo Muti, said on the 1st of January 2004 in Vienna: 'The music of Strauss unites the whole world'. THIS SERIES DOES A SIMILAR JOB. Do watch it. You will not regret. ...The Strauss Dynasty

5.0 out of 5 stars The Strauss Dynasty DVD set 5 Dec 2009
These DVDs are the most wonderful and satisfying set of Viennese operetta and orchestral music I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. All the stars are magnificent. All the Viennese and Austro-Hungarian settings (interior and exterior) are beautiful.
The orchestral arrangements and performances are absolutely perfect, as are all the violin pieces.
All the girls are gorgeous and the costumes are magnificent. The group dancing scenes of waltzing is a feast to the eyes. The story line is really interesting and the whole set keeps you enthralled from the first to the last scene.
The only criticism I have is when the operettas are introduced into the story line there are no trained singers and all the famous operetta arias are mouthed silently.

Everything else is perfect.

Every person who loves Viennese Light music must possess this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Subtitle Folly! 9 Dec 2010
Many years ago during my early youth period, I collected 78 rpm. recordings it was during this period I came across a recording of Edith Lorand and her Viennese Orchestra - the dye was set! - The music that has emerged over the years from this Romantic era has given me so much pleasure and never appears to want to go away! The annual events from Vienna featuring the New Years Concerts and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are eagerly awaited.
When aware of the availability of the film "The Strauss Dynasty" I lost no time to purchase such a prize - I was not disappointed - the splendid production has a marvellous presence about it and the recorded audio for its age was very good indeed . some familiar English faces make their presence , I particularly like the acting style of Edward Fox.
The one sad comment I wish to add is the non-availability to delete the over large Dutch subtitles!! contained on my DVD copy. never-the-less for all Johann Strauss and lovers of Viennese music I highly recommend this DVD.
