Product Description

Product Description

A fun and fascinating tour of the by-ways of British legal history. Did you know that the law requiring a London taxi driver to carry a bale of hay on top of his cab to feed the horse was in force until 1976? Or that Welshmen are not allowed in the city of Chester after dark? Nigel Cawthorne has unearthed an extraordinary (and sometimes hilarious) collection of the most bizarre and arcane laws that have been enacted over the centuries. Some of which, incredibly are still in force! It is still illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour.

About the Author

Nigel Cawthorne, is the author of a number of popular history books - including books on Pirates and Witches, and a biography of Alexander the Great. His highly successful series, Sex Lives of is still going strong, with the re-issue of Sex Lives of the Hollywood Goddesses.

On first viewing this book looks like the standard type of book you'd get as a freebie from a book club, but in fact it's more than just an "also ran". It's a fascinating read.

The book is divided into lots of chapters, covering most subjects you can think of in law, with stories/facts relating to the use of the obscure laws through the ages.
It's hard to put this book down once you start reading. Some of the laws will shock, some will make you laugh out loud and others will just confuse the mind! It's also an excellent book to just pick up and read a section here and there, so is an ideal coffee-table read.

The only down points are the constant editing mistakes....both in spelling and grammar. Hopefully by the next printed edition those will have been resolved.
Over all, a very enjoyable read.

Fun but with errors 3 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed this book - it's a lucid account of old laws which the author believes to still be in force in England and Wales. Law students seeking something light-hearted should read it to escape from 800page legal textbooks.

However - law students wil also find it to contain surprising errors. Perhaps it could be used as a revision guide in this sense. At one point the author states that the House of Lords is bound by its own decisions - this (famously to students of law) has not been the case since Lord Gardener's 1966 Practise Statement. Furthermore as the book continues it does appear that the author really hasn't used legal resources and legal academics to check his work.

This book 12 Dec 2005
By Nick
Format:Hardcover
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the quirky history of England.

This book contains a lot of old laws which, for some reason, are still laws even to this day.

This book provides an entertaining read, and also provides an insight into the history of these laws, how they originated and how they were upheld.

I do not regret buying this book, and is worth the money in my opinion.
