An extremely useful 'intro' compilation to a great, long-standing melodic rock band, containing 32 stunning tracks on 2 cds, selected by Dave King (of Classic Rock magazine fame). Covering 16 years of the band's output between 1978 (listen and wonder at the always stunning 'Kingdom of Madness' which still ferociously ends their live sets today) and 1993, it includes rare versions and 'B-sides' that collectors yearn after. It's perhaps no coincidence that it has emerged at roughly the same time as the band's own comprehensive discography laid down in the excellent 5-disc set 'The Gathering' and their brand new studio album 'The Visitation'.
Magnum fans (like myself) will feel the need to include it in their collection, despite probably already owning all of the tracks and variants proffered here. The good news is that the compilation is very generously priced, includes some intelligently written and informative sleeve notes and will not disappoint the casual or intrigued newcomer. Highlights (for me) include 'Soldier of the Line', 'When the World Comes Down On You' and the epic, astonishing anti-war song 'Don't Wake the Lion'.
