I got this having seen some of the original series, and it didn't disappoint. As a storybook, the writing is excellent and the pictures are wonderful. The stories each take about an hour to tell, the language is quite rich, and the imagery often rather dark, so this is an excellent book for older children (say 7+) who have wearied of Rapunzel and the Three Little Pigs, and have a good vocabulary. It also doesn't shy away from serious and difficult topics, like death. Because of all of these, they also make very respectable out loud reading for adults, if you like that kind of thing (which, in our household, we certainly do!).

This is a book suitable for all ages. The text is easy to follow and the illustrations are truly gorgeous. Anthony Minghella certainly hit all the right buttons when recrafting these enchanting stories.

Why can't I get this series on video or DVD? The 2 "The Storyteller" series on Channel 4 all those years ago was wonderful in every way. The production was superb, as were the scripts. The use of language was outstanding and the stories never fail to engage children - and adults. Whoever owns the rights - Channel 4 or HBO or ? You are really missing a trick both for trade or if you launched it to the educational market - It fits right in with The Literacy Hour and, if it were shown at school, children would buy it when they saw it in the shops. So, why not lauch this - and the wonderful "Greek Myths" from the same stable, first into schools - then into the trade.
