History at it's best 19 July 2008
Format:Hardcover
I am home schooling and bought this book 6 months ago to teach history to my 6 year old. I have not been disappointed. He has really enjoyed learning about the Egyptians and how much a part the River Nile played in their initial survival. I would recommend buying the activity book that is used alongside this as we have enjoyed making scrolls, writing hieroglyphs, making pyramid models and a makeshift river nile in the garden. I don't think I would have come up with these ideas on my own! The two definitely go hand in hand. The activity book is "The Story of the World: Ancient Times Bk. 1 [Paperback] by Wise, Bauer S". It took me a while to decide from the amazon search results which one it was as it's not labelled as an activity book.

The style and lay out of the book are lovely and it respectfully address certain aspects of relatively recent history but what isn't made clear is that this book is history from a creationists point of view discussing nomads from 7000 ago with no reference to earlier man or history before that time. If you believe god landed man on a ready made planet a few thousand years ago then this book is for you. If not then you will at least want supplementary material as a true history of the world this is not. You may need to be watchful of any further misrepresentations or omissions throughout the book but for me I looked elsewhere for a backbone for our home-ed history curriculum. Galore Park do some excellent and more science based text books but they are not nearly as elaborate or immersing as I found this book to be however, they conform to the scientific understanding of the origins of mankind.

I bought this to read to my 6 year old daughter - I wanted her to get to know about history in a chronological order and this seemed like a good book to start with. When it arrived I wasn't sure how we would like it as it contains a lot of heavy looking subject matter that I knew nothing about.
I shouldn't have worried - she has really enjoyed it so far and we've been finding out new things together. The chatty style is pitched just right for her level of understanding and the chapters aren't too long. You can't read too much at once as it would get too overwhelming but we've had fun discussing topics like how archaeology works, nomads, pyramids and mummies, military dictatorships (!). The language is sometimes a little Americanised but as long as you're aware of that it doesn't interfere with your understanding. I'm looking forward to the others in the series. A minor point but I also like having the hardback version, it has a nice robust feeling to it!
