Product Description

This DVD tells the complete story of darts from its early beginnings in English pubs in the Middle Ages right through to the dramatic televised competitions of the Embassy World Championship. Presented by the legendary Bobby George, the BBC's face of darts, and narrated by Dougie Donnelly, the programme uses a mix of archive footage and stills to tell the early history, before moving on to the televised era from the 1970's onwards. It all stared in 1978, when Welshman Leighton Rees beat Englishman John Lowe 11-7 in the first ever Embassy World Darts final. Lowe remains one of the most enduring characters in the game, capturing a world title in three different decades, going on to win again in 1987 and 1993. But it was 'Crafty Cockney', Eric Bristow, who ruled darts during the 1980's. He claimed the first of his five Embassy World titles in 1980 by beating veteran Bobby George and he successfully defended it the following year. But Bristow's domination was occasionally challenged by other legends of the board, notably Jocky Wilson and John Lowe. Yet one of the most famous finals of the 80's took place between Bristow and the relatively unknown Keith Dellor, who had already knocked out Wilson and Lowe. Dellor, given little hope, triumphed in perhaps the most exciting final in Embassy Darts history when he beat Bristow 6-5 in the 1983 thriller. It would be his finest hour. By the turn of the decade, Bristow gave way to his great friend Phil Taylor who won two world titles during the 90's including the epic 1992 victory over Mike Gregory, the greatest game of darts ever seen. Dutchman Raymond Barneveld was to match Taylor's record of two Embassy championship wins in 1998 and 1999, and the programme is brought right up to date with the emergence of first-time Embassy winner Australian Tony David in 2002 and the first ever live 9 dart finish achieved by Shaun Greatbatch at the Dutch Open in February 2002. A sensational DVD to be watched again and again by darts fans everywhere. Footage courtesy of Movietone, Pathe, Matchroom, BBC, and ITV Sport.

I was amazed to see some very old filmclips from the days of Jim Pike and nailthrowing Joe Hitchcock on this dvd. But these clips, along with a few comments on the darts and dartboards from days gone by, were the only signs of the title keeping its promises. "The story of darts" is in fact the story of the Embassy world Pro, but no true dartsfan, Yours truly included, would turn down 3 hours of highlights from Jollees and Lakeside with some of the best dartplayers in the world. It IS very entertaining and more than once I found myself holding my breath to see if that final dart went into the double, even though I have known the result for 15-20 years. I can recommend this dvd to any fan of darts, but I would also like to say that it calls for more. Why not make series of dvd's with selected matches of the top-players? "Bristows biggest", "Legend Lowe" or "All Alan Evans"? I would also like to see some of the great moments from all the other tournaments and meet all the players who didnt make it to this dvd. They all had their part in making the stars of the Embassy shine and they all deserve their own dvd.

This video contains some very interesting clips from the colourful history of darts, including from the days of Pike and Hitchcock, classic Lakeside/Embassy matches, and 9-dart finishes. My only criticisms are that no footage is shown from any PDC events (although it does mention at the beginning that the PDC refused to give the rights to do so), and that it mainly concentrates on the latter stages of BDO events, even though there have been many classic matches in the early rounds. Also, this video was made in 2002, and darts has come a long way since then. Hopefully there will be an update in the near future. But overall, a very good watch.
