For those who want "stick a finger in your ear" style folk music this is definately not for you!.for this is what it says on the tin,a great compendium of contemporary British folk, basicallly culled from the Island label and other similar labels, how could they possibly fail?Bert Jansch,John Renbourn,Jackson C.Frank(Whatever happenend to him?) Martin Carthy. The incredible string bandThe Ian Campbell folk group,John Martyn,Steeleye span,The rarely heard Mr Fox,the still much missed Sandy Denny, ditto John and Beverley Martyn, the brilliant "John Barleycorn must die"(Traffics "Stairway to heaven"Perhaps)Mike Heron, and finally the rare and highly collectable Mellow Candle bring disc one to an end
The second Cd is a continuation of the good work with contributions from A mazing Blondel,Gryphon>Gerry Rafferty,Fotheringay,John James and Pete Berryman,Richard and linda Thompson,The McCalmans,Dr Strangely strange,Mike Olfield,Bert jansch and Beth Orton,Beth Rowley and Johnny Flynn.
A better compilation would be hard to find, but why no Nick Drake?

This is a very eclectic CD, some good songs, some not so good songs. It's a good all rounder though and gives a flavour of the sort of traditional folk from times of old, some of which is still relevant and timeless, some not so perhaps. I like it as it features artists like John Martin, who was such a great singer /musician.
A nice CD and it's not too expensive so well worth it certainly. I'd recommend for anyone with an interest in folk music, you might hear some songs you have not heard before.

As others have mentioned, this is not strictly folk. But I think that's pretty clear, and there's some really good stuff on here. Price good, delivery good, and for the few songs I didn't like I have a perfectly good delete button, leaving me with a lot of stuff I did like at a very fair cost.

A broad showcase of why "Folk" attracted so many of us Non Folkies. I found tracks that I was unaware of, as well as firm favourites.

If this had been called "Folk Music for people who don't like the music" that would have been better than the misleading title they chose.
There's no Shirley Collins for a start-instead there's a heap of what seems like prog rock and a massive plug for the Island label.
Anyone who wants to explore just what's on offer in the field of English folk should avoid this one at all costs
