Format: Audio CD
Five Cds of 25 tracks each - 125 Blues songs in all, covering all the great artists from the late 1920s to the 1950s. Some other old compilation CDs contain a lot of filler material that you want to skip over, but not this one. All the tracks are listenable and all of them are redolent of simpler, harder times. Musically, generally very spare backing where the voice is the main ingredient.

Great and extensive sleeve notes on the history of the Blues by Deke Leonard, based on his recent book "The Twang Dynasty" The Twang Dynasty about the history of guitar playing.

This CD set would make a good accompaniment to the book, something to refer to as he discusses the various great influential blues guitarists featuered here.

Nicely packaged, my only niggle is the apparently random compilation order of the tracks. Yes it mixes up the artists and keeps it varied, but personally I'd have preferred it in either chronological or artist order.

I wanted a taste of old time blues and this turned out to be ideal. A few tunes I knew and many I am discovering as I make my way through the cd. Quality listening and very respectful price, for any true blues fan, this is a collection which you will listen to for years to come.

MOSTLY POST-WAR BLUES WITH A FEW EARLIER EXAMPLES OF THE BLUES 24 Dec. 2013
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This collection isn't really the "story" of the blues--only a part of it. Of the 125 tracks, only a handful are from the pre-war era--the 1920's/1930's--with the vast majority from the 1950's. Saying that, this is still a great collection of blues from a number of great performers.

The sound is very good overall, and for once there's a booklet included that has a nice essay on the history of the blues, beginning with field hollers, and continuing from that point into the post-war electrified blues. So this is a kind of story of the blues, but by no means the entire story. If examples of early blues songs/performers that are referred to in the booklet were included, this would be a truer story of the blues.

But if you purchased this set and the 3 CD "Definitive Delta Blues" set and/or the "Essential Mississippi Blues" collection, you'd have a pretty fair set of blues music. And at these prices how can you lose? Of the 125 tracks here, there's very little--if any--filler. Every song is worth hearing. Most of the tunes are by well known blues artists, with a few from lesser known performers. All in all, a nice set of blues--but it's not the entire history of the blues.
