Review

"David Nowell's "The Story of Northern Soul" reports the scene's twists and turns with the exhaustive detail of an insider who knows everyone in the scene worth knowing . . . He communicates what made the scene so special to its participants, and how those good times still ring in their ears." --PopMatters.com

Product Description

What began as an underground 60s Mod scene in unlicensed, no-frills clubs in the North West of England became a youth craze that has long surpassed all others. The Northern Soul scene has confounded its critics by surviving and growing into an adult dance phenomenon whose followers share a passion for the music of Black America unrivalled anywhere else in the world. The Story of Northern Soul takes the first ever in-depth look at the culture, the music, the artists and the people frequenting the all-night venues which are synonymous with the British Soul Scene. Packed with memorabilia and anecdotes from the Twisted Wheel in Manchester to the mighty Wigan Casino, The Story of Northern Soul is the definitive history of a dance scene that refuses to die.

I started reading this book and after a few pages it seemed familiar. After looking through my Nothern Soul book collection I realised it's the same book as 'Too Darn Soulful' which is very difficult to source and expensive if you can find a copy. I'm not saying this is a bad book in fact it's very good and I enjoyed it but if you are looking for a copy of Too Darn Soulful then buy this one and save yourself a fortune.

A great read for soul fans, lots of comments from the people involved in the 70's. Good memories from those who lived through the scene's heyday. The songs, Dj's, clubs, conflicts and drugs are all covered at great lengths. The foreign scene and up to date events are all covered. I could't put it down.
