Book Description

1 Oct 2006
The greatest story ever told? Find out for yourself as Murray Watts retells the key stories of the Bible. Everything is here, from greed, deception and hate, to love, miracles and redemption. Above all, the Bible is a love story: the moving tale of God's love for the world in all its wonder and brokenness. Murray Watts combines his knowledge and love of the Bible with skilful storytelling to introduce readers to the drama and mystery of this great book. His evocative and engaging retellings unfold the sweep of Bible history in words and phrases everyone can understand and enjoy. As well as gripping accounts of all the great stories, there are accessible paraphrases of a number of popular psalms and Old Testament words of wisdom and prophecy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written but uninspired 24 Nov 2010
The sub-title of this book is "The Bible Retold" and that is exactly what it is. It is a collection of a large number (400 pages) of short stories from the Bible, retold with that little bit of extra detail that the modern reader expects.

Murray Watts is a founder, with Paul Burbridge, of the "Riding Lights" Theatre company which aims to present the Christian message through theatre and drama. They published a first book of sketches, "Time to Act", in 1979 and have published further collections since. "Time to Act" was an original and inspiring book: the sketches retell Bible stories in an imaginative, challenging and often amusing way. I am sorry to say that I did not find this book imaginative or original. The stories are retold in a pedestrian manner and I found myself wondering who it was aimed at and why the publisher had bothered to publish it. The stories are not aimed at children. Perhaps they are aimed at teenagers, or at people of any age who are not familiar with the Bible. But then there are quite a few paraphrases of the Bible, e.g. the "Good News Bible" or "The Message", in easy to read modern English.

Of course, one's reaction to a book is largely a matter of taste. So this book may appeal to you, even though it doesn't appeal to me. My advice would be to take a good look at it and read some of the stories before you buy.
