Book Description

7 April 2008
Just over 100 years ago, Theodor Herzl launched the Zionist Movement. They called for a Jewish State in their ancestral land, Palestine. Fifty years later, the State of Israel came into being. Israel was established so that Jews anywhere in the world could have a homeland of their own. After independence, that process began with the in gathering of three quarters of a million Jews from Arab lands. As Communism disintegrated, more than a million Jews emigrated from the Soviet Union. Despite war and terror, Israel has sought peace through both secret and public negotiations. These efforts continue to this day, despite two major Palestinian uprisings.

Sir Martin Gilbert is one of the most eminent historians of the modern world, and here he sets out to produce a readable account of the history of the state of Israel, up to its 60th anniversary in 2008. To amplify the story, which of course is incident-packed enough, there are 15 facsimiles of documents and letters which are key to some of the tumultuous events described. These range from the Balfour declaration of 1917 to a letter from a young Manchester schoolteacher, Esther Callingold, written from Jerusalem in 1948 as the battle for independence unfolded, and in which she later died. Very readable and immediate in its intention, and thought-provoking for those wishing to learn more about Israel's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing collection of documents 12 Feb 2009
By daniel
wow is all i can say.

this book is amazing, it contains replicas of vital documents as well as slightly more personal documents in the run up to the state of israel being created & throughout its 60yr history.

this book is a must have for those of all ages interested in the state of israel, this isn't an indepth study of the country & its origins, its your own personal museum collection of articles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thin on history, thick on supplements 10 April 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Crammed full of pictures, pull out supplements, careful facsimiles of letters, posters, diaries and the Balfour declaration - there is much here to stir the interest. If you had hoped for some ground breaking research from the author or some new insights into Jewish history though I think as I was you'll be largely disappointed. More suitable for internet savvy (concentration challenged) teenagers and would be tourists to Israel than students of Middle Eastern history - though it has some value for the latter too.
