This is a well written and very inspiring book with very good background knowledge about cocoa and organic food. But it is also a great business book to learn from especially for someone who wants to learn about business from another person's real life experience. Particularly I learnt a couple of lessons from the book such as:

Alternative ways to market your product instead of the traditional TV or newspaper advertising which costs a fortune;

The importance of passion to building a business

Mutually beneficial business deals

Using previous experience to create successive ventures

And also mistakes that entrepreneurs can make especially around cashflow.

For me the greatest lesson from the book is how to turn your beliefs into something valuable that not only benefits you in terms of the business angle but also improves the life of others. It validates the fact that businesses can operate in an ethical way and still be profitable.

Overall a great read.

A good enough "business journey" book - the most interesting aspects were about looking at business from an ethical aspect - and the weakest aspects were I felt there was a significant chunk left out about how the business went from a small business to a large brand - it just felt that little unfulfilled!

Green & Black's is a modern day story of business rags to riches and a makes for a great read even if having the two voices of the founders throughout the book can make it a bit disjointed at times. Green & Black's was not an overnight success in the sense that its co-founder, Craig Sams, had been in the wholefood business for a long time before deciding to make a push into the world of chocolate. Undoubtedly his years of graft and commercial nous helped enormously in the ultimate success of Green & Black's. This book shows the ups and downs of running a start-up business with certain business ethics and then trying to build it up in a tough commercial world. I do find it slightly amusing/irritating that the owners feel they have to justify the ultimate sale of the business to Cadbury's in case people think they have sold out. Well of course they sold out, and no amount of justification can make it seem otherwise. On the other hand, 99% of the population, given the chance of making a massive profit would have done the same, so good luck to them!
