This DVD Set is invaluable for anyone interested in WWII its history/politics/art movements and social psychology. No WWII collection is comprehensive without this set.
These days the word 'fascist' is trivalised and thrown around by anyone who doesn't subscribe to anothers opinion. A somewhat worrying modern attitude which shows there is a severe lack of understanding of what fascism is; how it rises, from where and what destruction for humanity fascism can wreak, though it is made very clear in this this engrossing series.
Ironically, this DVD Set is extremely pertinent contemporaneously, as globally we seems to be in a time-wharp socially and economically, not dissimilair to that which brought Fascism to such evil heights in the 30s & 40s.
Viewing SOF it is possible to appreciate how fertile ground provides the launch pad for cult figures to rise & sheds light on how autocratic dictatorships can come into being, rooted as they always are in preceding socially climatic contributing mechanisms and conditions.
The vintage footage of Il Duchy is fasinating and has probably only ever seen by relatively small audiences outside Italy. The footage, facts and dates of events are extremely detailed with regards to both dictators.
Watching this DVD set "The Story of Fascism" is an educating experience, it does have the feel of a lecture rather than an emotive or dramtic documentary. This actually aids absorbtion of the wonderfully detailed and factual information without distractions of style.
The complex threads of Il Duchy and Italy are far less well known by most people than Hitlers rise to power. The coverage and perspective in this work of the many movements both politically and socially that arose in Italy; such as the "Futurists" in art and literature, provides an insight and giving a solid social context to Italian politics of the day and Mussolini. Truly excellent and informative production that is very watchable.
