I bought this Advent Calendar to introduce the story of Christmas to my 2 and 4 years old girls and I couldn't immagine how much they would have loved it. It was more succesful than the littlest pet shop and playmobil advent calendars! My girls were thrilled by the little booklets and they didn't want to read anything else before going to bed. Every day they wanted to know which one we would have taken out in the evening and before reading it they would spend a good 15 minutes peering through the pages and looking to the illustrations. Then they would listen carefully to the story and every day they would have many questions about it. Then of course they would fight in pure Christmas spirit to hang it on the tree! During the day they would go back to the old ones to look at the illustrations and to remember how the story goes.. When we put it away with all the decorations I was told "I can't wait for next year to read it again!!". PS we're not a religious family either!!!! The Calendar Itself open up and it's freestanding but can also be put up the wall. The books are very small (4 cartonate pages each) and comes in different shapes that when they're all in the Calendar they create some kind of Nativity Scene. You take them out one by one and they have a golden string to hang it on the tree... i think next year I'll take them all out to hang them on the tree and I'll have the girls to fetch the right "number" every evening to read it and then place it on the Scene.. so the 24th the Nativity Scene will be complete and I won't have to tide up all the books when I take down the Christmas decorations! The booklets are sweetly and simply illustrated in a way that (I assume) would appeal children. Also the stories are simply told with small phrases. Read more ›

This is going to become a family heirloom. It comes out every Christmas and my children don't miss the chocolate ones. When they were little I used to read the books to them, but now that they are older they enjoy reading the books to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars advent calender 28 Jan 2013
By Baker
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Forget the usual chocolate advent calender, these books are very clever with a story to tell each day from an individual book just right for the little ones fingers. We have them in our School and the children just love them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes Advent more of an Event 3 Jan 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The Story of Christmas helped get our children focussed on the story and meaning of Christmas this year. We do usually aim to get them an advent calendar that doesn't just supply chocolate or deliver pictures of snowmen, and this really bolstered that idea - the kids really looked forward to their turn to read out the day's story and hang it on the tree, and the books actually made great tree decorations.

My only gripe (hence four stars rather than five) is that the story in the books was a little bit too creative in filling in the gaps in the gospel story - nothing that was "off message", but I'd have preferred a writing style that was clearer about which bits were made up. However, that's a personal preference - I'd still recommend this readily to anyone trying to keep the meaning of Christmas alive in their family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous 29 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I loved this advent Callander, it is gorgeous and exciting to look at. Unfortunately it wasn't as durable as I hoped for and became torn easily by some very anxious children! More of a show piece than something to be handled

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely 16 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a lovely book, I have put this away for my baby daughter for next year, when she'll understand a bit more. Think it's a lovely idea to read a story each day instead of having a chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely item for Advent 11 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I decided this year that I had had enough of meaningless chocolate advent calendars based on a tv programme and was looking for something that could become part of our family Christmas tradition. Was not a difficult to decision to buy this product after reading all the other positive reviews. It is a lovely item (though probably not great for very little children as cardboard can rip when removing books). Tells so much more of the Christmas story than usual and really puts it into a wider biblical context. My children haven't complained about not having chocolate calendars this year and are really enjoying reading them. Highly recommend.
