Having only recently "discovered" the Blues, I was desperate to find reading material which would lay down a foundation with regards to it's history and background. Mr Oliver has managed to give me that, and more. He has shown that the music is a way of life, rather than just a form of entertainment, and has encapsulated in just 200 pages, almost 300 years of human living, it's high points as well as it's low, resulting in a volume which is a very enjoyable and thoroughly readable reference, to be consulted time and time again...

You come away from this book with a greater understanding of the dynamics that were at play when this music was being forged. That is no small deal. Paul Oliver's passion for his subject coupled with his academic analyses makes this an absolute must for anyone with any interest in this music.

The Paul Oliver book was written so long ago its out of date and unless this is an update it couldn't be recommended today when there's books like the Rough Guide to the Blues and the Bill Wyman book
