Book Description

The hilarious and touching true story of one woman's trials and tribulations with IVF

Product Description

When I was a teenager, I thought you could get pregnant from sitting in a jacuzzi. Not that I'm sure I even knew what a jacuzzi was, but I knew they were racy places where racy things happened. Men, as far as I remember, didn't even have to be there. So long as they'd been in the water in some sort of excitable state, pregnancy was inevitable - even if you kept your pants on. You see pregnancy was that easy, that dangerous and it could ruin your life.

Almost 20 years later and pregnancy could still ruin my life. Although now it is not the threat of what having a baby would do, but of not having a baby at all. I have been trying to get pregnant for two years and have not even come close to hearing the pitter-patter of tiny feet...'

So begins The Stork Club, Imogen Edwards-Jones' very personal, very moving and very funny memoir of her (and her husband's) trials and tribulations with IVF. Poked and prodded by endless doctors, pumped full of an exotic cocktail of drugs and forced to try to have sex at the most inopportune moments, Imogen pulls no punches in her account of this process. In her words, 'The fertility game is like a marathon, where you just have to keep on running. No matter how many times the finishing line is moved, no matter how increasingly heavy the going or unpleasant the terrain, you pick yourself up and, ever more determinedly, keep on going. Until one day, you pray, you might just make it...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it straight through once when I first bought it, and then re-read it section-by-section as I went through the various stages of IVF.

I found it very helpful as it gives a very human and honest account of the actual experience of each stage, the medications involved and their side-effects as experienced by Imogen. This type of personal account is just not found in the more technical guides to IVF.

As well as being sad in places, it was also very funny in others and I insisted on reading out relevant sections to those family members involved in our IVF journey. This book became a great companion through our treatment.

I enjoyed reading this book but I felt that it was not realistic. The author clearly could afford many vast and expensive treatments that most people going through infertility could hardly afford!!! She went to the best ever fertility specialists without hesitation on the financial implications. For those going through fertility treatments, finance is one of the main issues which hinders the couples moving forward which was def not the case in this book.

In addition, I felt the book was short and did not go into much detail about the treatments and most importantly the couples feelings. I think the author could have done better in this regard.

I would recommend this book for couples going through or considering IVF treatment as the author focuses mainly on this.

Having gone through a couple of "advise" books that just made me feel depressed, I found this book in the Infertility section and was SO grateful for this brilliant read. I was laughing tears reading it! This book can be so funny as well as sad and, amongst many things, looking cheekily on a serious topic. It is great to have a more cheerful view on reproduction.
Of course the book will not bring you babies, but lot's of laughter and a more relaxed view on life :o)
