Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s dance beat, the Stone Roses defined the British guitar pop scene of the late '80s and early '90s. After their eponymous 1989 debut album became an English sensation, countless other groups in the same vein became popular, including the Charlatans UK, Inspiral Carpets, and Happy Mondays. However, the Stone… Read more in Amazon's The Stone Roses Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's a classic, obviously: at the time it was released, the La's were the only other keepers of the hot seed of jangly West Coast Byrdsian pop. In The Stone Roses' wake, thousands of pale indie-boys fell pregnant with their own bands: Blur and Oasis wouldn't exist without them, and even Richey Manic cited "This Is The One" as his favourite ever song. But it wasn't just the frankly gorgeous Gene Clark and Pink Floyd guitar spanglings of "I Wanna Be Adored" or "Made Of Stone"; nor Ian Brown's triumphal proclamations on the assassination of the Queen ("Elizabeth My Dear") and his own Christ-like powers ("I Am The Resurrection"), that made the Stone Roses so seminal. That was down to the rhythm-section, Reni and Mani, who were hot and tight enough to prompt the first ever sightings of vaguely co-ordinated indie-kid dancing. Alas! John Squire would never be this inspired, nor Ian Brown this in tune, again. --Caitlin Moran

For me this is the best album there has ever been. Ian Brown's soulful voice is complimented by first rate guitar, bass and drumming (thankyou John Squire, Mani and Remi) that works beautifully. But what sets this album apart is it's lyrics - words and prose that the Gallagher brothers could only dream of coming up with. Classic anthems such as This Is The One and Waterfall provide a more upbeat foil for the murky depths of Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down and Made Of Stone. Brown and Squire even have the audacity to have a pop at the royalty with the short but bittersweet Elizabeth My Dear. And just when you thought the album couldn't get any better, the Roses finish it off with I Am The Ressurection which I feel is quite possibly the best song that's ever been written - a upbeat, dreamy song with some of the most vitriolic lyrics penned.

It's easy to dismiss this album as just more Madchester 'lads' music but, for me, and the millions of other Roses fans it represents so much more. The arrogance found in songs like I Wanna Be Adored is completely merited - The Roses can back it up in every way. This is a fantastic album, and it takes pride of place at the top of my collection.

I'm sure no-one who has heard this album will doubt that it deserves five stars. Every so often a band comes along whose every member brings something irreplaceable to the music and the stone roses are in this category. all the "critics" say that ian brown has a weak voice but this album wouldn't have worked with jeff buckley on vocals would it? i first heard the hypnotic guitar of john squire when he guested with oasis at knebworth in 96. i was 14 and i twagged school to buy this record 2nd hand the next day. it remains in my top ten albums of all time and i'm now 22. it is simply wonderful, wonderful, life-affirming pop music. it is not "indie" or "alt-rock," it's simply pop. in the same way as oasis, along with the flaming lips and (i mean this) michael jackson, the stone roses are capable of conjuring up music that defies any sort of negativity. there is absolutely nothing wrong with this disc. even the sleeve is great. it would be stupid to pick out a best song as i change my mind about which one it is every day. there isn't a worst song, obviously. if you don't already own this record you're an idiot.

I first listened to this 'album' on vinyl back in early 1991. The opening throbbing bass of 'I wanna be adored' capitivated me in a way no opening of an album ever has before or since.

As the album progressed through Waterfall, Bye Bye Badman, Elizabeth my Dear, Made of Stone, Shoot you Down and penultimately This is the One, I knew that I was listening to something special and didn't think it could get any better.

I listened transfixed and remember that I was so astounded at 'I am the resurrection' that I sat there for a good 10 minutes afterwards taking in what I had just heard.

I still get the same feeling when I listen to 'I am the resurrection' on CD nearly ten years later(The vinyl long since worn out!)..... The Second coming is a great record but it did not have the same impact as the first(Although I would still highly recommend that CD to anyone). I felt that the Stone Roses could have achieved and were capable of so much more.

I cannot recommend this album highly enough as it should be in every CD collection. The Stone Roses by the Stone Roses is a truely defining piece of music.
