Uninteresting and dull 21 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was rather disappointed with this book, as Anne Fine is a great children's writer. This book, i think lets her down. It lacked in excitement although it did have its ups & downs. I choose to read "The Stone Menagerie" as it sounded interesting, especially because of its settings. But after reading it I found it dull. It didn't have the usual Anne Fine thrill or intrigue, it certainly didn't hold the reader and was easily put down. Although I haven't been put off reading any more of Anne Fine, I wouldn't recommend "The Stone Menagerie" to other children to read.

This book was quite surprising for me. As I am not a keen Anne Fine reader I was not really sure what to expect. This book appealed to me though. It is about a boy who has to visit his aunt at a mental institution, but as the story unfolds it is more about Flora, the strange girl in the institution grounds. This book is good as it challenges the reader to think about certain issues such as mental care, vegetarianism, circus animals, childbirth and relationships. It is not all about these issues though. They are like secondary storylines with the main plot revolving around the often funny characters. I would recommend this book to anyone as it touches on many issues but at the same time is a charming novel.
