9 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Sewing Directory TOP 500 REVIEWER on 17 Dec. 2012
Format: Paperback
This book teaches you how to embroider over 200 different stitches, but unlike most stitch bibles it doesn't just show you how to do the stitches it also gives you projects at the end of each section to get you practising the stitches too.

The book is split into sections by embroidery type eg. blackwork, goldwork, hardanger and canvas work. Each section starts by teaching you several different stitches, each with detailed written instructions as well as large colour diagrams, and ends with instructions for a project. Projects include an eye mask, a phone case, a book bag and a clutch purse, Kate manages to combine traditional techniques with modern projects.

The templates and stitch charts are at the back of the book, some require enlarging by 50%. There is an introductory chapter which covers the basic stitches, tools and techniques making this a good book for beginners.

Format: Paperback
Different people find different things to help occupy their time but whilst some like to paint and others like to read, there are some who love the art of sewing and embroidery which this title by Kate Haxell brings to the fore with a whole host of beautiful projects that require various skills as well as stitch types to create.

It's quite addictive to read and whilst I'm personally more a darn and make do type of guy I do have a relative that loves to create special projects for friends and family that she designs herself. Add to this a whole host of idea's as well as skills that she can develop to suit her own purpose, beautifully illustrated stitch patterns alongside easy to follow guide and all in this is a great book to help encourage a skill that feels like it's a dying art. A great book and could be an ideal Grand/mother/daughter set of projects to help pass the skills and love on to a new generation.

Great book well written with lots of detail. I purchased this book for additional information on blackwork. This book contained more detail, in the one chapter on Blackwork, than in the whole books that I purchased before where the entire book is on Blackwork only. This book is well worth the money.
