5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book for young readers 21 Nov 2009
By C Grigg
The Stephensons' Rocket is a lovely story about a family coming up trumps, despite what seem like insurmountable obstacles. Dad can never do anything right, and when he brings a greyhound home, it seems like it's going to be the last straw for Mum. But it's amazing what a scruffy old dog can do for a family! Sensitively written with lots of humour, this book will strike a chord with children everywhere. I really enjoyed it, and plan to give it to the various young readers I know as a Christmas present. The lovely Rocky is hard to resist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book! 4 Feb 2012
By Frankie
I loved this book! It is brilliantly written and by the end of the book I felt best friends with the narrator 'Anna'. It could be read by anyone of any age, dog lover, or not. It really is an excellent tale, tackling real issues, with real people.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book! 18 Nov 2011
By V
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A very prompt despatch direct from the author - next day delivery. Had a look through myself before giving to my son and I couldn't stop reading .... and thankfully it was the same reaction from my son as well. He is a good reader, but sadly a reluctant one and I constantly search in vain for books/stories that will capture and keep his attention. This one has and I have ordered the sequel already.

My son enjoyed the signing and message from the author and his initial comments were that "this is really good" and "they are just like a real family." Being a literal, logical child this is just what he likes - he doesn't seem to be into all the "usual" reading lists and I struggle all the time to find books/stories that will keep his attention. He has so far read more than halfway through in just two readings.

A gem of a story which gently combines thought provoking issues whilst relating so well to children, families and their everyday lives. Jayne Woodhouse you should be proud!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for everyone! 18 Aug 2010
This is a book with everything! Engaging characters, pacy plot and a lovable dog. Once you start, you can't put this book down and you will find yourself laughing and crying at the Stephenson family and Rocky the greyhound. The whole book is true-to-life and everyone who reads it will relate to the trials and tribulations of an ordinary family, as seen through the eyes of Anna, the eldest daughter. It is written for children, but all the adults in my house couldn't put it down either. Uplifting, heartwarming and thought-provoking, with a delightfully happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Story with Happy Ending! 19 Nov 2009
I originally bought this book as a gift for a friend's children who are keen readers and have a dog of their own.I just had a quick look through the first chapter but soon found myself reading the whole book! The story is believable and I'm sure it will strike a chord with many young readers who are going through difficult times at home and need a bit of hope.It ends on a positive note(which is very satifying for the reader)... I ended up having to buy another copy for my friend's children as the original one is now being read by my father.Very enjoyable for all ages.Looking forward to Rocky 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real treasure 19 Nov 2009
This delightful book is a must for all independent readers - and for adults too! It is so much more thn just the story of a rescued greyhound, dealing sensitively with complex issues such as family breakdown and ageing with humour and real writing skill. Never resorting to sentimentality, every chapter leaves you wanting to read on. Its main achievement lies in its immense accesibility for children. This book would make an excellent stocking filler!

This book is light hearted and easy reading. As a recent member to the ex racers club I have become interested in anything greyhound and I think other owners would enjoy this book.
