Book Description

“Even before Morley told him, Dennis knew things were about to get ugly. A man did not club you unconscious, bring you to his estate and tie you to a chair in an empty storage shed out back of the place if he merely intended to give you a valentine. Morley had found out about him and Julie.”

A short story in the tradition of Fleming or Dahl, “The Steel Valentine” is a gem, exemplifying the suspense writing of Joe Lansdale.

classic Lansdale: a story of sex and revenge and a bad guy that thinks he's untouchable but find out that there is always a bigger fish. Dog eats dog (almost literally)

3.0 out of 5 stars ok but not the lansdale i know and love 13 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
i am a major lansdale fan and will try anything he writes. he writes in a few genre and this isnt really my thing. its quite stylish in its own way and reminiscent of the old mobster/sam spade era crime novels.(please forgive any inaccuracy in description there, as i say, not my taste). its pretty atmospheric and very gritty and graphic, but definitely more a 'mans read' id say at the risk of insulting any female readers who enjoy their crime hard, dirty and with absolutely no 'softly softly' involved! (uk reference for any non uk readrs!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A nasty, violent little noir tale 10 May 2012
By Josh Mauthe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As "The Steel Valentine" opens, a man is awakened by his wife's lover, who's discovered their affair. And the snarling dog nearby seems like a threat that things are about to get very ugly. And, oh, man, do they ever. "The Steel Valentine" moves like an absolute rocket; it's a kinetic, violent piece of work in which a man is thrust into a fight for his life against an unlikely opponent. And if you've ever read Lansdale's other work, you know that the man can write action like nobody's business.

A quick warning: if animal-related violence bothers you, you may want to give this one a pass. Otherwise, you've got no excuse. This is a perfectly stripped-down little story, one that shows you everything Lansdale does well and how good he is at it. Well worth a buck for a great little tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sound too wicked to be called a scream 30 Jun. 2012
By Cheryl Stout - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Master storyteller Joe Lansdale does it again. He tells us the story of Morley, cuckolded husband, and Dennis, ex-basketball player who loves Morley's wife.

This is a nasty little revenge tale, told with Lansdale's special little dashes of blood and guts for seasoning. Add in some Dobermans, a chemical attractant and a man bent on revenge. But remember - revenge can work both ways.

If you have a weak stomach or a tender heart for dogs, this story might not be for you. But if you like a great short story, try this one of Lansdale's. You won't be sorry (although it might come back to haunt you on Valentine's Days in the future).

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of jealousy and revenge and it's consequences 27 April 2012
By Chris M. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a short story about a man caught having a affair with a rich and powerful man's wife. When the man discovers his wife's infidelity, he sets out to commit a horrific plan of revenge. But things just don't quite work out according to plan. Like the vast majority of Joe Lansdale's work, this is a must read for any crime fiction fan worth his or her's salt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Valentines Day nightmare! 9 Jan. 2012
By Char's Horror Corner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a fun short story!
Having an affair can be dangerous, especially when the cuckolded man is very rich, devious and insane. A fast paced revenge tale that takes a turn.
