'The Steel Spring' is the second part of a two book series,
featuring Chief Inspector Jensen, and based in an imaginary
northern European country. It makes good sense to read the
first 'Murder on the Thirty-first Floor,'before embarking
on this novel.
Jensen is abroad, having had a liver transplant operation,
when he is asked to return home.Upon his return,he finds
that all communication within his country has broken down, and
seems to be in the midst of an epidemic.
This is Wahloo's most overtly political novel,as Jensen attempts
to discover what has happened to his country,Wahloo uses the
epidemic as a metaphor for the breakdown of the political and
social views represented by the government of Jensen's country.
An interesting novel, sometimes dated (it was first published in
1968),sometimes prescient.
