4.0 out of 5 stars What is Steampunk? 9 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For me, 'Steampunk' means, at its purest, works set in worlds where Babbage succeeded and electricity has been ignored and/or failed. However, being a form of 'punk' it spreads across time and genre-boundaries, not least because some authors wrote about the future before it happened, even in the 19th century.

Unfortunately, this 'Steampunk Megapack' isn't very good at being 'Steampunk'... the selection is poor, even for a budget title... you could put together as good a list by Googling "Steampunk". It looks like the editor(s) have cobbled this selection together without bothering to bother thinking much about it. For example, 'The Mid-Watch Tragedy', by Vincent Starrett, is a straight-forward sub-Agatha Christie murder-mystery set on a trans-Atlantic liner that (wait for it) has steam engines.

However, it is a mixed bag, and it's only 31p. It may not be Steampunk, but I was glad to discover 'The Machine Stops' by E. M. Forster (which is his version of 'Brave New World'). As a rule of thumb, I found the editors of this collection were honest enough to detail the contents; don't buy it as an "Introduction to Steampunk" but if you've got 31p spare, you could do worse than buy it for some bloody-good stories (with the bonus of trying to work out what they have in common).

Good luck on that last one... ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not all steampunk, but readable 6 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Many of the stories in here are not steampunk by any definition I'm familiar with, even if retroactively applied. Steampunk is essentially a postmodern sf sub-genre that is the contemporary of cyberpunk. Maybe you can stretch it to include the original works that steampunk often celebrates or parodies, such as Wells, Verne, even Mary Shelley - but Lovecraft? Friel? Wouldn't have thought so.
Still, this megapack is an eclectic mix of sometimes very readable fantasy, horror, adventure, and some actual steampunk. Not at all bad, would recommend it at the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confused of Portsmouth 23 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Totally acceptable editing for the Kindle.
I'm a little confused, in that I'm not sure on could honestly say there are 26 steampunk stories here, classic or modern. Some are just plain confused.
That being said, there are some real gems in here, and the collection is excellent value.

As long as you enjoy fairly catholic tastes you could find this pack most enjoyable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs more steam 8 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
To bity - some people like disjointed collections I don't so a bit disappointed. It never really got enough steam up to keep my interest. If you are just dipping your toes into this genre probably not the best introduction - there are lots of good free short stories even in the kindle store.

I would say that not all the stories come under the category of
steampunk, but it was enjoyable all the same.

Cheap, but not really steampunk, with several 19th century stories, e.g. HP Lovecraft, Edgar Alan Poe.

Not that I was expecting refreshingly original materials, these are fairly well worn and might loosely come under Steampunk, though not when most of them were written. Read more
