This book made me laugh, caught at my heart and then broke it. The story is clearly building to something but I didn't know what - I won't spoil it but this is definitely not one for public transport (A Case for Books)

A perceptive insight into family life, both idyllic and dreadful, and the individuals that are part of it. The characters are all people that you can believe in...and the ending? It's an absolute stunner! (Our Book Reviews)

A cleverly written and tragically beautiful story filled with empathy and regret, that will stay in your thoughts for a long time, The State We're In is a story of love, family, abandonment and putting ghosts to rest. More About the Author

I was born in Teesside, NE England, in 1969. I enjoyed a traditional 1970's childhood, watching too much TV and eating convenience food because nobody minded if kids did that in those days. Since graduating from Leicester University, where I studied English Language and Literature, I've worked in advertising and as a management consultant. In 2010 I was proud to be awarded an honorary doctorate of Letters from Teesside University.

I've always dreamed of being a writer and my first novel - Playing Away - was published in 2000; that year the Evening Standard identified me as one of London's 'Twenty Faces to Watch', which was very nice of them!

I like to keep busy and to be described as one of the most-loved and biggest-selling women's fiction writers in the UK, (who wouldn't like that?!) Over two million copies of my work have been sold in the UK and I'm translated into 25 different languages. I've published twelve novels in twelve years, all of which have been Times Top Ten bestsellers. Whatever It Takes, my twelfth novel, examines those undeniable, lasting issues that seem to interest us all. It scrutinizes our theories of love, motherhood and infidelity with (I hope) honesty and humour. I'm known for examining the thorny issues of the lives we lead today with my trademark, up-front, tell-it-as-it-is style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 6 July 2013
By Alex M
An excellent book and much deeper and more engaging than you might otherwise assume. The characters are wonderful and I found myself very tied up in their lives. When I finished I even had a book hangover from the withdrawal, a superb summer read!

I stumbled on this book by chance and after reading many of the reviews decided to give it a try, I'm so glad I did. It was beautiful, such a well written and mesmerising story that I couldn't put it down and finished it in a few days. For anyone who likes to read about love I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning 25 July 2013
By Roo1983
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am going to keep this short and sweet because I don't want to reveal a single morsel of the plot, but please take my word for it as a die-hard Adele Parks fan that this really is one of her best books to date. I became hooked after someone lent me a battered copy of 'Playing Away' a few years ago and realised that I wasn't just reading any old chick-lit. Adele's books are raw, thrilling and always sensitively written and 'The State We're In' is no exception. Empathy with each and every character in the book, whether you like them or not, is simply impossible to avoid. I can't recommend this book highly enough. But when you've finished - please remember to #KeepTheSecret!
