This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1915. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVII You, my reader, will remember, far back at the beginning of this narrative, how, when a little lad on the Minnesota farm, I looked at the photographs of the Holy Land and recognized places and pointed out changes in places. Also, you will remember, as I described the scene I had witnessed of the healing of the lepers, I told the missionary that I was a big man with a big sword, astride a horse and looking on. That childhood incident was merely a trailing cloud of glory, as Wordsworth puts it. Not in entire forgetfulness had I, little Darrell Standing, come into the world. But those memories of other times and places that glimmered up to the surface of my child consciousness soon failed and faded. In truth, as is the way with all children, the shades of the prison house closed about me, and I remembered my mighty past no more. Every man born of woman has a past mighty as mine. Very few men born of women have been fortunate enough to suffer years of solitary and straight jacketing. That was my good fortune. I was enabled to remember once again, and to remember, among other things, the time when I sat astride a horse and beheld the lepers healed. My name was Ragnar Lodbrog. I was in truth a large man. I stood half a head above the Romans of my legion. But that was later, after the time of my journey from Alexandria to Jerusalem, that I came to command a legion. It was a crowded life, that. Books and books and years of writing could not record it all. So I shall briefen and no more than hint at the beginnings of it. Now all is clear and sharp save the very beginning. I never knew my mother. I was told that I was tempest-born, on a beaked ship in the Northern Sea, of a captured woman, after a sea fight and a sack of a coastal stronghold. I never heard th...

Review

A magnificent literary accomplishment. (Irving Stone ) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

Inspired by his friend Ed Morell, who spent five years in the barbaric San Quentin jail, The Star Rover is a searing indictment of a violent and corrupt penal system. Describing the brutality of a life behind bars, it explores the power of imagination to transcend physical hardship, and ultimately sustain hope.

This new Rebel Inc. edition has specially commissioned pieces by two Scottish lifers who have experienced at first-hand the inhumanity of prison life. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dieing a little 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
London's last work is a soaring piece of writing. Based on London's friend Ed Morell's memories of his time in solitary, "The Star Rover" is much more than a mere prison tale. London addresses man's subjugation at the hands of the state who willingly blinds the public and shows the plight of the incarcerated. What strikes first is Standing's plight-placed in solitary having been framed by the poet. Standing incurs the wrath of the governor and warders alike which leads to his 'jacketing'. From here the themes of the novel take off: the self, the state, god, what it means to exist and a portrait of cruelty. Standling traverses time in his period in solitary and revisits previous lives leading to varied and often humerous encounters. One small facet of London's skill is shown in the different voices each character has when depicted in the narrative: all are different from Standing's and are morally different. London depicts 'what it means to die a little' with incredible skill, diction and imagery: the first time he 'dies' the most remarkable language and imagery is evoked to show his star walking. "The Star Rover" will change you. It will show you incarceration. It will show you a believable spirituality. It will make you question what it means to exist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another outstanding London novel 18 Nov 2011
By Sandman
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this as a random London book, that I'd never heard about, and yet again I was suprised by how brilliantly written and engaging the story was. It's also a unusual story for the time, it wouldn't be out of place if written today, in fact they'd probably make a film out of it, most likely starring Christian Bale.

Anyway, excellent read, just a shame I finished it in one sitting

4.0 out of 5 stars Memorable and beautifully written. 18 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
An unusual book, and not like London's other work. The 'stories within the story' setup is both great fun and the whole thing is quite a memorable read.
