The Galaxy's most immodest con is back, with the reconstructed, but still deadly, Angelina at his side. Actually, at his side with a swelling belly and a .75 recoiless tickling his ribs, and a Marriage Master signalling the end of bachelorhood. A quick hold up in true di Griz style later, and a it's off on a larcenous honeymoon. Which is duly interupted by the Special Corp yanking Jim back to solve the insoluble. Interstellar Conquest is impossible, as everyone knows. Everyone except the insanely militaristic planet Cliaand, who are swallowing planet after planet. Inskipp wants to know How and Why, and Jim is sent in to get the answers - by joining the Cliaand Army!
As with so many good series', the Stainless Rat saga has lost it's burnished shine as time goes on. Not this one, though! The second of the series, this is classic Harrison writing classic di Griz. The story rips along, and all the ingredients of the first novel are there - the gadgets, the humour, the cons, and the babes! It is actually more polished than the original, and longer, too, but at just under 200 pages can be read in an absorbing sitting. The series chugs on, but after the first 5, the tarnish is there. The first five (the original series) are Sci-Fi Classics, and read as well today as they did when they were first published 30 years ago! Why are you reading this, when you should be reading them?!

4.0 out of 5 stars The guerrilla rat does it again! 31 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Jim DI Griz, the stainless steel rat is sent to battle against the small but powerful Cliaand. In this novel Jim is joined by his wife Angelina and a band of angry amazon women.
It is fast, furious and extra-ordinarily funny with a hint of heroism thrown in.

4.0 out of 5 stars RAT ATTACK! 28 April 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Slippery Jim is off to save the Universe and fill his pockets at the same time. On the way to saving the Universe, Slippery Jim gets married at the point of a gun, becomes a father and takes on serious bad guys. He assumes three different identities, tackles a world without any weaponry on his person and is saved by beautiful women, one of whom is Angelina, his spouse. His greatest challenge, however, is differentiating the identity of his twin sons! Yes, this one is worth reading, so go for it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Light Space Espionage 2 Aug 2004
By C. T. Mikesell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The novel reads a lot like an episode of Mission: Impossible set in outer space. Faced with defeating a warmongering interplanetary force, James DiGriz infiltrates his way in by assuming another's identity (complete with facial alteration) then procedes to bluff and improvise his way through increasingly hazardous conditions. DiGriz is cornered several times, captured twice, but always manages to avoid getting his neck snapped in a trap.

There's nothing particularly groundbreaking in this novel. DiGriz is cut of the same cloth as most gentleman rogues. The story has a couple deus ex machina moments, but nothing intolerable. I thought the escape from the airfield was nicely handled, and Harrison was able to introduce The Planet of Warrior Women into the story without degenerating into "Bill the Galactic Hero" nonsense.

If you enjoyed the first novel in the series, you'll likely enjoy this one also. If you haven't read the first one, go ahead and read it before this one - it introduces a couple characters and makes their all-to-brief appearances here more enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Try this in audio! 5 Dec 2010
By Katherine Hooper - Published on Amazon.com
Format:MP3 CD
Warning: Don't read this review if you haven't read the first Stainless Steel Rat novel.

Several nights ago I was in a bad mood. I had asked my husband to pick up M&M's while he was at the grocery store because my daughter needed them for a school party the next morning. Due to a bad cell phone connection, he came home with the wrong thing and I didn't discover this until 11 pm, after the closest grocery store was closed. Grumbling and feeling sorry for myself, I got into my car and set out searching for M&Ms.

Fortunately, I had grabbed an audiobook on my way out the door: The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge by Harry Harrison (produced by Brilliance Audio). Within 2 minutes of hitting play, I was smiling and laughing out loud -- a complete mood reversal. It's not just the despicably charming characters of Slippery Jim DiGriz and used-to-be-evil Angelina, but also Phil Gigante's hilarious delivery.

The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge begins with Slippery Jim robbing a bank and Angelina driving the getaway car. Jim is as clever and ingenious as ever, but now he's joined by Angelina -- the evil villainess from the first novel who's supposedly been "fixed" and is now working with Jim for the Special Corps, though they've both escaped and are attempting to return to lives of crime together. Angelina hasn't lost any of her skills and ambition -- she just has a bit of human decency now. Fortunately for the reader, not enough decency that she isn't eager to go along on Jim's crime sprees and help him out of tight spots, even while pregnant. This combination of Angelina's brilliant criminal activity, deadly fighting skills, and sweet wifely and motherly instincts is absurdly amusing. And we're never quite sure if she's really cured of her sociopathic tendencies... Phil Gigante gets her voice just right.

Jim and Angelina end up turning themselves in and Jim gets sent on a dangerous assignment in which he must figure out how the planet Cliaand is conquering other planets. Along the way, he goes undercover as a Cliaand officer (Gigante's Russian accents are so funny here), meets an army of beautiful women, wears transparent clothes, undergoes psychoanalysis (Gigante's got a German accent here), and creates a troop of polite robot butlers who, in Gigante's uppercrust English accent, say things like "Thanking you, Sir" as they throw bombs at the enemy.

The Stainless Steel Rat series, so far, is superb in every way -- the plot is exciting and clever, the writing is tight and colorful, and Jim's voice (it's written in first-person) is endlessly entertaining. Phil Gigante's humorous narration makes it doubly funny. This is definitely a series to read on audio!
