This is a delightfully different look at the development of one of the world's great transit systems. Each decade of the Underground's existence is shown through a Harry Beck-style map showing the extent of the system at that time. Accompanying text describes the events that occurred during the decade in question, including station openings, closings and relocations.
My complaints are that much of that text is in very small print and difficult to read without a magnifier, and that this is substantially identical to the previous edition; the last decade is described by a map accompanied by a single paragraph that basically says "nothing has changed". I rather wish that the Docklands Light Railway would have been included, but since that is a different system, its omission is understandable.
This is a great concept and I hope that someone in New York considers doing a similar book on their extensive subway system. It would also be applicable to the other large urban transit systems, such as Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City and Toronto.
