Purchased as a birthday gift for my 12-year-old nephew and he just loves it. Says it has EVERYTHING in it.

No problem with the order. Arrived on time and was exactly as depicted.

Good friend for a P.E. Teacher 14 Oct 2009
By G. Kaiser - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I teach physical education at a high school. This book has been great for two reasons.

1) Children that do not change for class have to write an article review. Reviews about each sport (detailed history is not included about every sport) are entertaining and easy to understand for students. In addition, the rules of each game are described in very good detail that I have begun to use this book as a study guide for different sports.

2) Although the book does not recommend ways to alter games that can be played in a classroom- a little creativity goes a long way. My class just finished a "Team Handball" unit that became very easy to understand with the use of pictures in the book. We used a volleyball and tape on the court and a couple of soccer goals. Worked great.

I can't give this book any less than 5 stars because it is a very complete book of just about any game you could ever think of. The only issue becomes, "Who would need that?!"

Well, this guy did because I am a gym teacher. If you have a reason to know about underwater football, you might like this book too.

I hope my review filled your heart with glee.

Good cursory overview, but falls apart in the details 20 Feb 2009
By Shran - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm a sports enthusiast, and this book caught my eye quite a while ago with its grassy cover. Good gimmick. I just found it on a bargain rack and decided to pick it up.

It's not bad, but it could be a lot better. If you're looking to get a very cursory overview of lots of sports, and maybe learn about a few you never knew existed, this is a great book. But if you want in-depth details, you're going to be very disappointed.

The book is also littered with grammatical errors (if I see another incorrect usage of "due to," I think I'll scream) ... don't publishers hire copy editors anymore? And then there are the little details that the publisher didn't get right in the graphics. For example, the rugby pitch is shown as being 100 meters long, from dead-ball line to dead-ball line. The text directly above it correctly states that it's 100 meters from try line to try line. A page earlier, an illustration of a Canadian football field lists it as being 150 yards long to the back of each end zone ... which is right, but the graphic shows the center of the field as being the 50-yard line, not the 55.

It's the little details like these that make me suspicious about the accuracy in describing the sports I know nothing about.

Too bad. A project like this held a lot of promise.
