I'm a sports enthusiast, and this book caught my eye quite a while ago with its grassy cover. Good gimmick. I just found it on a bargain rack and decided to pick it up.
It's not bad, but it could be a lot better. If you're looking to get a very cursory overview of lots of sports, and maybe learn about a few you never knew existed, this is a great book. But if you want in-depth details, you're going to be very disappointed.
The book is also littered with grammatical errors (if I see another incorrect usage of "due to," I think I'll scream) ... don't publishers hire copy editors anymore? And then there are the little details that the publisher didn't get right in the graphics. For example, the rugby pitch is shown as being 100 meters long, from dead-ball line to dead-ball line. The text directly above it correctly states that it's 100 meters from try line to try line. A page earlier, an illustration of a Canadian football field lists it as being 150 yards long to the back of each end zone ... which is right, but the graphic shows the center of the field as being the 50-yard line, not the 55.
It's the little details like these that make me suspicious about the accuracy in describing the sports I know nothing about.
Too bad. A project like this held a lot of promise.
