'Thrilling, haunting and deeply romantic' --Rachel Hore, bestselling author of A Gathering Storm

Product Description

In the labyrinths of an ancient city lies a Queen’s treasure…

1205 - the town of Chinon is beseiged by enemies of King John, and his young Queen calls upon a trusted servant to conceal her treasured jewels.

Emily Braden is intrigued by the medieval story of Queen Isabelle, and cannot resist when her cousin Harry, a historian, suggests a trip to the white-walled town of Chinon, nestling in France's Loire Valley. But when Harry vanishes and Emily begins to search for him, she stumbles across another intriguing mystery -- a second Isabelle, a chambermaid during the Second World War, who had her own tragedy, and her own treasure to hide.

As Emily explores the ancient town of labyrinthine tunnels, old enmities, and new loves, she finds herself drawn ever closer to the mysterious Isabelles and their long-kept secrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars a splendid book in many ways 3 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
I read this book several years ago and absolutely loved it. Somehow I lost my copy then, like buses, found two copies at once. I will be reading it again soon.

This book features King John and it slips from past into present effortlessly with such an impact that it is unforgettable. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys history, romance and thrillers.

This book has it all and my life is definitely the better for reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow Start 23 April 2012
By Polly
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This story centres on Emily Braden who is fascinated by Medieval Queen Isabelle. Emily is invited by her cousin Harry who is an historian, to join him in Chinon, France, for a short holiday and at the same time do some investigative work into Queen Isabelle.
When Emily arrives in Chinon there is no sign of Harry and at first she is not unduly worried as he is not the most reliable of men and tends to lose track of time.
As the story unfolds Emily also learns the secrets of another Isabelle who lived in Chinon during WWII. After the first hundred pages I was about to give up. It was so boring, nothing was happening except we were introduced to the other guests staying at the hotel. However I perservered and was glad I did. The old Susannah Kearsley came to the fore and the story moved on with speed.

The relationships between the people in the novel which eventually came out was a bit too neatly packaged for me.
Not a patch on Mariana and other Kearsley novels but nevertheless a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved this one!
I do think that this one is very different from others by Susanna Kearsley--- less 'time slip' and rather more of a 'who done it' but I loved it anyway and MUST visit Chinon asap... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars as always brilliant
This is the only book I had not read of Susanna Kearsley but I was not disappointed this is not as good as Mariana or the Rose Garden but well worth the read.
