This book was very entertaining, holding my attention throughout. I loved the fact that Arabella was a woman of character and intellect, and a woman ahead of her time. There was adventure, tradgedy and betrayal. This i thought was a book of substance.

Bertrice Small, normally an EXCELLENT writer, has created a novel that, while set in an interesting time period, eventually falls pretty flat. Arabella Grey isn't as meaty as Small's previous characters, and her reasons for doing what she does seem artificial. I simply could not warm up to this character, which for me is RARE in a Small novel. The heroine's mother in particular annoyed me.
Stick to Small's Renaissance features (the O'Malley saga, the Leslie saga). MUCH more entertaining....
