Product Description

Product Description

Rumi's "Spiritual Verses" is the greatest mystical poem in Islamic culture and of all time. Rumi tells of our human separation from reality, love and truth. He shows how love - neither erotic nor sentimental but divine, by which the universe is held together - enlightens ignorance and dissolves suffering. The first book of the "Masnavi" is the key to the whole work: it takes off from simple, amusing tales into realms unimaginable, but wholly familiar to the human heart.

About the Author

Called 'Jelaluddin Balkhi' by the Persians and Afghans, Rumi was born on September 30, 1207, in Balkh, Afghanistan, then a part of the Persian Empire. He was the greatest mystical poet of Persia, famous for his didactic epic Masnavi-ye Ma'navi (Spiritual Couplets), a treasure-house of Sufi mysticism. Rumi died on December 17, 1273.

Alan Williams is Senior Lecturer in Comparative Religion at the University of Manchester.

A superb work 7 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
If you ever wished you could read Rumi in the original and so taste the true flavour of his teaching, here is a translation which, at last, will satisfy you. Without being pedantic or obscure, it allows the reader to discover Rumi undistorted and in all his power. Both brilliant and moving.

This is the best poetic translation of Mathnawi of Rumi in English. I would recommend it to all lovers of Rumi. I am already looking forward for the next volumes.

absolutely superb 11 Feb 2008

At last, a translation of Rumi's Masnavi which, without ever being pedantic or obscure, is both faithful to the original Persian and to Rumi's teaching. I highly recommend it. This is only the first book of the Masnavi, though (the title is incomplete and misleading) and I am looking forward to the translations of the next five books. A brilliant and moving piece of work.

I have been reading the Masnavi of Rumi in Farsi and since my Farsi sis not that fluent, I purchased this book to follow along in the English. It is one of the best translation I have read so far. Of course, nothing beats the original in Farsi!!
