Book Description

1 April 2007
St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote the Spiritual Exercises between 1522 and 1524, and today, nearly five centuries later, Jesuits in training are still required to study it and follow its precepts during their first year in the novitiate. Not designed to be read cover to cover in one sitting, this book is made up of daily meditations meant to be closely examined in isolation over a period of about four weeks, under the guidance of a spiritual director. Though The Spiritual Exercises have traditionally been read primarily by those training for the priesthood, in recent years increasing numbers of lay people and non-Catholics are discovering its joys and insights. This edition-edited by Father Elder Mullan (1865-1925) and published in 1914-is essential for anyone interested in strengthening his or her faith and relationship with God. Spanish priest and spiritual philosopher SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (1491-1556) has been described by Pope Benedict XVI as "a man of God," "a man of profound prayer," and "a faithful servant of the Church." The principal founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius was canonized in 1622. His writings include Letters and Instructions of St. Ignatius Loyola 1 (1524-1547).

If you are able to find a little time each day to set aside for this it is very much worthwhile.

I have been on a silent retreat doing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola and nothing quite beats that....

but in this crazy, noisy world where it's hard to find peace and quiet...this is the next best thing!!! = )

5.0 out of 5 stars The manual for over-achievers 29 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the short book that has inspired thousands of men over the last 500 years to throw away their fear and systematically achieve what seemed nearly impossible at the outset. This spiritual manual of the Jesuits is generally read and executed by each Jesuit twice before he is finally ordained. There are some parts that have not translated well since 1524 - such as the suggestion that we should regard ourselves as 'a sore and ulcer'. (But maybe that reflects the fact that St Ignatius, a wounded soldier, was physically ill for much of his life and might have seen his own body as deeply flawed.) In contrast to that part are many sections which are ahead of their time - the visualisation sections which urge the reader to hear, smell and feel the experiences of Christ's life. If you followed the manual - and each serious reading is meant to take a month - you would become someone with the discipline of a soldier of Christ, as Jesuits see themselves. Several times a day you would be working to remove particular sins you had identified. You would also be reassuring yourself all the time that God loved you and that joy should be a recurrent part of your emotions. Armed by the ideas and practices of this book, Jesuits have changed the world. A handful of them are still remembered for the extraordinary effect they had in China 400 years ago. Many work alone in the field - whether helping refugees in Mexico or working as a peace activist in Syria or heading the Vatican.
